At first look, hairworms appear to be a simple, drab, brown tube. But look very close, and you will see skin structures that resemble the surface of far off planets. Nematomorph larvae look very different from the adults. Cysts are a way for freshwater nematomorphs to hitchhike from water to land. Eggs and Egg Strings. Freshwater gordiids lay eggs in very long egg strings containing millions of eggs.

The life cycle of freshwater nematomorphs culminates in a burst of worms from their host body, equaling half of the host's body weight. Danger to pets or humans. Although nematomorphs have often been found in close proximity, and even living in humans, they are not parasites of any vertebrate animal. Where to find worms. Can you find these worms in your back yard? Many people have reported these worms from inside their own homes. Why study these worms? Would you study a small group of non-human parasites?

We recently described a new hairworm from Kenya in the online journal PLoS ONE. This species is unique in that it consists of only females. Become a Citizen Scientist! Have you found a hairworm?
