Monday, September 29, 2008. A big caveat on menu labeling. 8220;Specifically, we needed to address the challenge a quiet and surprisingly large contingent of our community faces with eating disorders,” Ted Mayer, the executive director of Harvard’s dining services, said in his blog. Detailed nutrition information on what’s offered at the facilities is still available from the school’s website and onsite kiosks. Posted comments on the decision have been mixed. Some students asserted that the situation...

Friday, October 31, 2008. McCain vs. Obama: What's a restaurateur to do? Washington – A MUFSO debate between stand-ins for the U.S. presidential candidates proved as contentious as the actual face-offs between Barack Obama and John McCain, with the participants disagreeing on everything from Sarah Palin’s competency to what makes a good Oval Office occupant. Team McCain portrayed their candidate as the better capitalist, leader, commander in chief, decision-maker and independent thinker. “This ...She lau...

The Scoop: June 2008
http://nrnfoodserviceblog.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 30, 2008. Can I pour you another cup of coffee? How about another plate of carbs, or maybe something sugary to keep you going? You’ll definitely need more than the usual oomph and sustenance to get through July, which should have been specially named for restaurateurs. National Eye Poke Appreciation Month, perhaps. By that time, getting fined could have lost its novelty for New York’s chain restaurants. About 2,000 of them will be subject to financial penalties as of July 19 for fa...Feature...

Sunday, August 31, 2008. New Orleans restaurants batten down. The Big Easy's celebrated restaurant industry certainly hasn't had an easy time of it. Now, three years after the Big One, comes The Even Bigger One, a storm that's been described by New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin as "the storm of the century." This from a man who was on the ground during Katrina. To say about other establishments there. Saturday, August 30, 2008. The "I" in choice. Mention the latest initiatives from Starbucks or Danny Meyer.

The Scoop: No Happy Meal toy, though
http://nrnfoodserviceblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/no-happy-meal-toy-though.html
Friday, November 07, 2008. No Happy Meal toy, though. Discounting, it seems, is highly relative. Knocking $2 off the price of a pie may work in the pizza business, but the high-ticket Ruth’s Chris chain has to operate on a different scale. So, after posting a 15-percent drop in comp sales for its non-franchised steakhouses, the wheezing brand is planning a mail drop of $25-off coupons. It's also experimenting with the fine-dining equivalent of value meals. And, perhaps, too much of an outlay. O’...

The Scoop: Gift cards get a loud, 'Bah, humbug'
http://nrnfoodserviceblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/gift-cards-get-loud-bah-humbug.html
Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Gift cards get a loud, 'Bah, humbug'. Gift cards have consistently been a holiday blockbuster for the restaurant industry. But that streak’ll end if several public watchdogs have their way. They’re warning shoppers to forego the no-brainer gifts because the chain or restaurant accepting the card could go bankrupt after the holly wreaths and mistletoe come down. Was headlined, “Consumer Alert: Are your gift cards safe? Instead, the story notes that consumers reportedly held $...

The Scoop: March 2008
http://nrnfoodserviceblog.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 27, 2008. Signs of the (new) times. This is a good time to be in the sign business. First KFC reveals that it might replace its familiar exterior logos with ones reading, “Kentucky Fried and Grilled Chicken,” a dramatic act of support for the chain’s new roasted chicken (it’s roasted on a plate that leaves grill marks; hence the name. Apparently “Kentucky Fried and Roasted/Grilled Chicken” was adjudged to be a bit much.). Labels: Kentucky Fried and Grilled Chicken. Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
