Laquo; Celebrate the Day. Who needs a view when you have this room. Only I can go to the desert and experience torrential rains. So it goes. Better than the hurricane (Florida bike trip), tornado (Myrtle Beach), or volcano eruption (Hawaii) I have experienced in the past. Of course, the day I left was spectacular. Stayed at a new place. Only two other guests – so it was nice and quiet. The staff was very nice and the place was immaculate. I am so glad you got away and had a nice time! You are commenting ...

Andrew, Emilee, Katie and I left the smog of Cairo for a few days on the Sinai Peninsula. It takes a bit of doing to get there, never mind the risk to life and limb with Egyptian drivers, but it is certainly worth the effort. We went to St. Katherine’s – it is the town by one of (maybe the) oldest functioning monastery – commissioned in 330 AD. Sunrise on Mt Sinai. Hiking down the Mt. Eventually the guides and the people thin out and you can enjoy the views and accomplishment – and after about 6 ho...

Laquo; Mount Sinai. Tourism is alive in Egypt. After returning from the Sinai, we had a nice dinner at the Greek Club in downtown Cairo. Outdoor, good food and even Beer! Saturday was a day of cards, Boggle as well as a trip to the market – the highlight was Sufi dancing which is truly amazing. Sufi dancers are the whirling dervishes and one guy twirled for 30 minutes – and at the slow parts of the dance he was doing at least 60 rpm! Thanks Andrew and Emilee for your hospitality! City living Cairo style.

Musings, adventures, mishaps and the like. Archive for June, 2010. June 20, 2010. June 8, 2010. I had a little too much time on my hands yesterday. And the heat was, well, hot. How do I joyfully, intentionally embrace my last seven weeks here without dismally wallowing in the inevitability of saying goodbye (or, at least, goodbye for now)? This is the task at hand.

Musings, adventures, mishaps and the like. May 26, 2010. Tonight, similar to most weekend nights, we were drinking beer on a roof with an international group of friends, and a Muslim friend among us, between sips of Stella and a cigarette, told this story from the hadith:. Stories like this, among many others, break down the simplified renderings of Islam that dominate a lot of the conversation in the Christian West: images of Muslims trying to work their way to God while we at home are relying upon grac...
