The lines, the writer and the wardrobe. Monthly Archives: November 2014. Because We’re Worth It! November 4, 2014. I’ve never knowingly been paid less than my male counterparts, but the thought I might have makes my blood boil! I turned on the news this morning to hear that women earn 80p for every 1 earned by men. Is the Equal Pay Act worth the paper it’s written on? Is the gender pay gap a symptom of a more widespread prejudice towards women in the workplace? While working freelance, I was amazed as a ...

The lines, the writer and the wardrobe. Let’s get this blog started! February 8, 2013. Back in my twenties two things were unthinkable – having babies and growing old in London. One down and one to go! On the eve of my fortieth birthday, I’ve decided to blog my way out of the boredom of domestic chores and child rearing. I can vent, pontificate and muse to my heart’s content. I’m brimming with the excitement of leading a double life – virtual and real! Subscribe to new posts from theclosetwriter.

The lines, the writer and the wardrobe. Monthly Archives: March 2013. Sugar, spice and all things toxic! March 11, 2013. Last Thursday night, I got to taste history at a talk by food historian Tasha Marks at the House of Wolf in Islington. Arriving as instructed at 7pm in the upstairs Apothecary bar, my friend and I were given black and white candy striped bags printed with the words, “NOT TO BE OPENED UNTIL INSTRUCTED”. My personal favourite was the Milk Sherbert dib dab to compliment the part of the ta...

Tails from the Lion City. Tuesday, 26 August 2014. A fairy Cemetery - Bidadari. Bidadari meaning fairy according to Wikipedia, coming from the Sanskrit word widyadari. These fairies are reported to be kind, an angel, a nymph. In another record its also stated that the word comes from the Malay for fairy, so I'm not sure which is correct but either way "fairy" it is! 1903 - 45 acres of land were sold with plans to build a Christian cemetery. 1905 - A further 33 acres bought for a Muslim cemetery as well.

Tails from the Lion City. Monday, 30 March 2015. Mosaic Playgrounds of Singapore. Tails from the Lion City. Monday, 29 June 2015. Toa Payoh Town Park. What a charming little park! Visiting here as I waited to meet a friend I was delightfully surprised with this park, situated just by the busy road, opposite the enormous bus station and next to the sport complex and swimming pool, but what an idyllic find, why had a never investigated before! The tower at Toa Payoh was completed and opened in time for the SEAP Games in September 1974 and the athletes were housed next to the garden.

Last years I posted the festive lights on the major shopping thoroughfare here, Orchard Road http:/ www.singaporetales.co.uk/2013/12/sending-seasons-greetings-from-singapore.html. Tails from the Lion City. Monday, 19 January 2015. Kranji War Memorial and Cemetery. It's been getting on for a year since I visited here with a few friends and they've long given up asking me when I'll write this post. To be honest where do I start? What should I say? How do I do this place justice? As I start writing now I have no idea how this will go and where my thoughts and my fingers will take me. Too many names. name after name. More modern times and conflict, died Sarawak in 1965. There is a Chi...
