In the Kitchen: Oven roasted potatoes (and vegetables)
http://penny-inthekitchen.blogspot.com/2015/02/oven-roasted-potatoes-and-vegetables.html
Thursday, February 19, 2015. Oven roasted potatoes (and vegetables). OVEN-ROASTED POTATOES (AND VEGETABLES). This is a very simple and flexible recipe, given to me by my friend Isabel. She made it with potatoes only, which is what I did for a few years. Then I realized you could add other vegetables too. I've suggested the ones I usually put in; I'm sure others would work too- though you may have to stagger when you put them in if you use something like green beans. Onions, peeled and quartered. Pour veg...

The Big Idea: April 2009
http://quiltthebigidea.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
A group blog for Design Camp quilters. Sunday, April 26, 2009. Details- finishing the edge. For a sense of scale: ach of the individual squares are 1-5/8 x 2"; this method would only be appropriate for a small quilt, one that wasn't going to be handled very much. Back side below. About the quilting: Top one is hand-quilted, bottom is machine quilted with invisible thread on the front. I've decided instead to do hand-tying at the corners. Sunday, April 5, 2009. A Place to Explore Quilting and Other Creative Avenues. Laquo; Scripted Landscape. Chocolate Brigadeiros to Share on Valentine’s Day. Doodle, Reflect, and Plan. If you typically throw your calendar into the recycle bin at the end of the year, you may want to reconsider. While it is a wonderfully simple creative exercise – treating each square as its own canvas, each page as its own gallery is a nice scale to work on (I say having just completed a full-size bed quilt) – it is also so meditative. You are c...

In the Kitchen: August 2015
http://penny-inthekitchen.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 27, 2015. A Salad for the End of Summer. My friend Susan and I share many interests, one of which is food and cooking. She has often introduced me to new cookbooks, going back to the Moosewood Cookbook. In the late 70s. She recently mentioned to me cookbooks by Ellie Krieger, someone I hadn't heard of. I looked at one of her books in the library and then purchased a used copy of Weeknight Wonders: Healthy Dinners in 30 Minutes or Less. MOZARELLA, TOMATO, AND PEACH SALAD. Handful of fresh...

In the Kitchen: July 2015
http://penny-inthekitchen.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 25, 2015. Last week we got our first five-pound delivery of King Salmon from Sitka Salmon Shares. Jaden Hair's recipe gives suggestions for five different seasoning combinations. I've given below a version of one of them, and then another that I plan to try next. I'm sure many other combinations would work as well. Adapted from a recipe by Jaden Hair:. Http:/ steamykitchen.com/96-tropical-island-salmon.html. 1 lb fillet salmon (or smaller pieces fine too). Olive oil to brush on the salmon.

In the Kitchen: September 2014
http://penny-inthekitchen.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 17, 2014. The starting point for this stir-fry was a recipe for "Spicy Garlicky Tofu and Broccoli" in my favorite Asian cookbook, Jaden Hair's Steamy Kitchen's Healthy Asian Favorites. I had picked up some beautiful snap peas at Mariano's on a drive home from Chicago, and wanted to do a simple stir-fry with what I had in the house. Turned out that meant a half-pound of ground turkey to go with the snap peas. Obviously, feel free to substitute other ingredients! 2 t cooking oil. If yo...

In the Kitchen: A cool soup for summer
http://penny-inthekitchen.blogspot.com/2011/08/cool-soup-for-summer.html
Wednesday, August 3, 2011. A cool soup for summer. I like making cold soups in summer, and I have a few favorites that I make each year (yogurt/cucumber, apricot/wine, gazpacho). But today I happened to have extra buttermilk on hand (left over from making scones), and I noticed a recipe in a new cookbook I'd just purchased that would help me use it up. This soup is great! I was dubious about the base of buttermilk, which I've only used before in baking. I'm a convert! NY: Hearst Books, 2006).
