加上過去 近百年的時間裏，輔導幾乎是被心理學所壟斷的，哲學作為一種輔導的形式就更沒有人 包括哲學家們 注意了。 直到一九八二年德國哲學家Gerd Achenbach 成立了世界上第一所哲學實踐工作者(Philosophical Practitioner)的組織 德國哲學執業學會 (German Society for Philosophical Practice) 即是 世界哲學執業學會 的前身 ，並且開始以哲學輔導員的身分公開執業。 九十年代起哲學輔導亦開始在美國受到注意，主要歸功於現任美國哲學實踐工作者協會(American Philosophical Practitioners Association 簡稱APPA ) 會長Lou Marinoff 的普及著作 柏拉圖的靈丹 ( Plato Not Prozac ) 的流行。
