KASB PR and Marketing: Give a Shout Out to Kenny G...AND Public Education!
http://www.pittskasb.blogspot.com/2014/02/i-recently-attended-kenny-g-concert-in.html
Friday, February 21, 2014. Give a Shout Out to Kenny G.AND Public Education! I recently attended a Kenny G concert in Kansas City (AWESOME by the way), and during one of his breaks from mesmerizing mellowness he introduced the members of the band who travel with him. Most of them have known each other since high school.that would be public high school. The vast majority of Kansans support their public schools. The vast majority of us graduated from public schools and many of us went on the public col...
KASB PR and Marketing: Speak up!
http://www.pittskasb.blogspot.com/2014/04/speak-up.html
Sunday, April 13, 2014. A familiar buzz word these days – well, actually a buzz phrase – is ‘tell your story.’ But because we don't know where or how to start, it is easy to just move on to the next thing on our crowded 'to do' list and wait for someone to ask. If there was ever a time to speak up, it's now! Your community hears news reports and reads social media posts, but your perspective is critical in helping everyone gain perspective and form opinions. So, how best to speak up? Who will feel the im...

Thursday, January 8, 2015. Can you tell a story in six words? The twitter feed at right follows the hashtag #kasbcon, and if you look through the tweets you’ll read a story about the 2014 KASB Annual Conference. All those different perspectives create quite a story about an event! Of course this twitter feed only captures the tweets that used the special hashtag. There were undoubtedly others! What story are you telling about yourself? Create a twitter account. And start by following a few people and org...

KASB Research: August 2015
http://kasbresearch.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 25, 2015. Comparing Apples and Studebakers. In the previous five blog posts, we discussed Peer States, Aspiration States, and High Impact States. We also looked at funding formula components and talked about funding fairness. Let’s review what we found. Here are the Peer States, from most similar to least:. We concluded the following:. 5/7 peer states, or 70% spend more per pupil than Kansas. 7/7 peer states, or 100% have lower student outcomes than Kansas on at least 8/14 outcome measures.
KASB Research: September 2014

Monday, September 29, 2014. Poverty in Kansas - How Are We Doing? A colleague of mine shared this report. From Oklahoma related to poverty and household income, and asked me if there was anything similar available for Kansas. I told her that aside from the report. KASB did recently about at-risk funding and poverty, there wasn't much to be found out there, so I decided to do some brief analysis myself. Based on data obtained from the US Census Bureau. How are families in Kansas doing? Family incomes over...
KASB Research: No Fair, No Fair!
http://kasbresearch.blogspot.com/2015/08/no-fair-no-fair.html
Tuesday, August 18, 2015. No Fair, No Fair! We’ve been talking a lot about what states we should be comparing Kansas to, and have come up with several methods. We’ve also talked about what each state’s funding formula looks like. In this blog post, we will look at the fairness of funding in Kansas. Http:/ www.schoolfundingfairness.org/National Report Card 2015.pdf. Per Pupil Funding Level:. Distribution of funding across local districts within a state, relative to student poverty. Indicates whether a...

Thursday, April 23, 2015. BOARD MEMBER DO'S AND DON'TS. Good Board Members Do. Recognize that their responsibility is not to run the schools, but to see that they are run well. Work through the properly appointed administrative officers according to the organization as planned. Function as part of a policy-forming and control board rather than as part of the administrative team. Refer, as far as possible, all complaints and requests to the appropriate administrative officer. Vote only for the best-traine...
KASB Research: Leveling the Playing Field
http://kasbresearch.blogspot.com/2015/08/leveling-playing-field.html
Monday, August 3, 2015. Leveling the Playing Field. In previous posts, we’ve talked about identifying Peer States and Aspiration States, and about comparing their demographics, funding, and outcomes to Kansas. In this post, we’re going to talk about how to compare states on certain measures while removing the influence of others. In the previous posts, we identified six categories into which our 44 state-level measures fall:. In order to test out these assertions, we would need a way to remove the effect...
I'm from Kansas: February 2015

Saturday, February 21, 2015. If Richard Sherman were a dog, he would be my parent's Border Collie, Clancy. Smart, athletic, and possessing a superior understanding of the game, Clancy and Richard are unique and fun to watch. So enter Clancy. My folks needed help with the sheep and goats and a well-trained dog was just the ticket. Clancy was raised on the farm and then went away to herding college when she reached the appropriate age. She came home a steely-eyed missile man. One of our assignments (even i...
KASB Research: The Secret Formula
http://kasbresearch.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-secret-formula.html
Tuesday, August 11, 2015. So now we’ve come up with sixteen states to compare with Kansas - seven peer. States, five aspiration. States, and four higher impact. States. The next question is, what do we want to compare when looking at these states? We should, of course, start with the variables that were used in the initial analysis. But what else? Https:/ schoolfinancesdav.wordpress.com/. The following are the categories Verstegen presented in the survey, and Kansas’ responses on each:. It is a linear tr...

Friday, January 24, 2014. Cutting Back on the Ben and Jerry's. Perhaps because of my reputation as a Dairy Queen savant, (I know the location of every DQ in Kansas and once celebrated the 4th of July by going to every DQ between Greensburg and Lawrence), KASB Communications Specialist Andrea Hartzell pointed out that I have written about all of the basic food groups, but nothing about dessert. So let's talk about ice cream. In fact, if you were to monitor my grocery cart, you would find that I am buying ...

KASB Leadership Services: March 2014
http://kasbleadershipservices.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 3, 2014. Get In The Game. One of the greatest challenges of leadership is moving people forward when they would rather stand still. As a former coach (some would say old coach) I can remember many times telling players to “get in the game.” It was a phrase used to motivate, inspire, and push for better performance. It was generally used when situations were tough and the scoreboard was not in our favor. How can we influence others and help generate support for public education?

KASB Leadership Services: April 2014
http://kasbleadershipservices.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 1, 2014. How do we get aligned? In the recent months KASB Leadership Services has been working with service centers throughout the state to align supports and provide a systemic approach to developing leadership at all levels. Refers to this as the “What Matters Most” framework. Supports provided are divided into two levels: Foundational Learning. Those supports found within the Foundational Level. Supports take educational leaders through deeper learning experiences that will result in th...

Attempting Sanity with a Sleep Deprived Mind
Attempting Sanity with a Sleep Deprived Mind. Monday, May 01, 2006. 12:48 in the afternoon. I think I have something like 35 sources for my paper, which is just an ungodly amount. And the sad thing is, even with that many sources I'm left wondering if I can squeeze like 8 pages or whatever out of this lit review. I guess we'll see. On the positive side, at least I made some headway. It's going to be a long night tonight, but that's what grad school is all about, right? Posted by PittsJay at 12:51 PM.
