Hugo (2011) | Review by Mark Leidner | Poets on Film

https://poetsonfilm.wordpress.com/2011/12/02/hugo-2011-review-by-mark-leidner

Hugo (2011) Review by Mark Leidner. Could have been more boring if Martin Scorsese had directed it from a chair attached by bolts to the shoulders of a brain-damaged Tom Hanks, like a cinematic Master Blaster of schmaltz. Twenty minutes in. I started fidgeting, looking around at the other bougies packed in the theater, wondering if I was in the wrong film. Nay, the wrong skin. I’d read. Presents filmmaking not as porous, but implacable. Would that a story about the magic of visual storytelling had ha...

Young Adult (2011) | Review by Hannah Brooks-Motl | Poets on Film

https://poetsonfilm.wordpress.com/2011/12/21/young-adult-2011-review-by-hannah-brooks-motl

Young Adult (2011) Review by Hannah Brooks-Motl. Say you shave your legs. That razor burn around your pubic area is like. It’s pretty ugly and painful, right? Is painful in the way shaving, or not shaving, or shaving when your groin’s not really ready to be shaved again, is: unpleasant, compulsive, and, if you think about it too much, pretty self-indicting. But then again not too self-indicting, since. Themes, topi, and attitudes feel similarly sophomoric; its points about culture, narcissism, females, e...

Poems About Oranges: February 2013

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Hi friends, family, and anonymous Poems About Oranges readers! But this blog no longer relates to my career goals, or to a lot of my interests. I still love reading, of course, but I post my reviews on Goodreads. And I still love baking, but I don't do much of it anymore because I've changed the way I eat. That's why I have decided to retire Poems About Oranges and move onto another blog project: In the Key of Vegan. I've been experimenting with vegan cooking. I hope that you come check out the new blog.

Poems About Oranges: July 2011

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

I'm jumping the gun a little bit, but . . . Tonight I made Shirley O. Corriher's fresh strawberry pie recipe from Bakewise. I made the pie for my dad's birthday tomorrow. I've never been a big fan of pie, so I've never learned to make them, and I think he's suffered from the loss there many years! There were always cakes and cookies in the house, but the poor man couldn't get a slice of apple pie to save his life. But this is his year. Lesley A. Owens. Links to this post. Poems About Oranges: Sleeping Preacher

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2011/09/sleeping-preacher.html

Have you ever put off reading a book for one reason or another, only to finally read it and desperately regret your years of hesitation? That's what happened to me last week with Julia Kasdorf's Sleeping Preacher. Kasdorf was one of my instructors at Penn State. I've always loved her poems (I wrote about one here. Was her first book, a book that I knew she had a love-hate relationship with. I just wasn't sure that it would be as moving as her later work, so I put it off. Do you live in the city? From the...

Poems About Oranges: January 2012

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

If Zadie Smith and Douglas Adams Had a Baby . . . It would be precocious and aggressively clever and named January 2012. Work has been so hectic this month that once January 23rd rolled around, I realized that I had only read one book since the new year: Zadie Smith. S Changing My Mind: Occasional Essay. I thought. "I'm shooting for 52 total this year! I can do better.". And a few choice back issues of The New Yorker. And bits of The Best American Poetry of 2011. To my Goodreads list. Collects Smith's pr...

Poems About Oranges: I never thought I'd say this, but . . .

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2012/04/i-never-thought-id-say-this-but.html

I never thought I'd say this, but . . . I think I've lost months to watching NCAA basketball. I mean, I've also been busy with friends and travel, which are great, but I feel like I've spent most of my nights this spring happily planted on my favorite bar stool in downtown Lawrence watching what has been probably my favorite KU basketball team ever. Later in the next month or two, look for posts on. Reading about London, in London. A few of my favorite novels so far this year. Lesley A. Owens. Internatio...

Poems About Oranges: My Big Fat Summer Reading: Vanity Fair

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2011/06/my-big-fat-summer-reading-vanity-fair.html

My Big Fat Summer Reading: Vanity Fair. Last summer, it was Middlemarch. This year, I'm having a go at William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair. My annual way-too-long novel read has begun! I was inspired to read Vanity Fair. For two reasons: 1) Vanity Fair. And 2) I came across this awesome The Hairpin. About great classic novels with mean female main characters. It was funny and clever and totally convinced me that Thackeray was worth tackling. ( Carrie Hill Wilner. Also wrote an article. And Jennifer...

Poems About Oranges: Easter, "which is natural which is infinite which is yes"

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2012/04/easter-which-is-natural-which-is.html

Easter, "which is natural which is infinite which is yes". For a lot of different reasons, the last few weeks have been rough. Like day-old stubble rough. Like poorly poured concrete rough. Like bouncing down a mountain made of pumice stone rough. Well, maybe not that. Rough, but they haven't been exactly bunny soft, either. Luckily, today was Easter, my favorite of all my family's holidays. We frosted cookies . . . I thank You God for most this amazing]. By e e. cummings. How should tasting touching hea...

Poems About Oranges: December 2011

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

My Year in Lists: 2011. Final count: 47 books. Including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry! Most fun: The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. Which I read twice! I also read the first five sequels in the Mary Russell series in a matter of months. Biggest surprise: Eat, Pray, Love. I can admit that I found it profoundly moving when I read it last spring. Sometimes books live up to their hype. Greatest accomplishment: Vanity Fair. It was looooooooong. Fortunately, its awesomeness was proportional to its length. Here&#82...

Poems About Oranges: September 2011

http://poemsaboutoranges.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

The new tent, which my friend Ryan helped me stake up using his ninja knot tying skills. But, Winfield, you also gave me and endless sea of bluegrass and old timey folk music as far as the ear could hear. You gave me Ashes to Immortality. Hot Club of Cowtown. Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul. Lunch, day 2. Winfield, what I'm trying to say is I love you. See you again next year, same time, same place? Yours oh so truly,. Lesley A. Owens. Links to this post. Collection of poems related to artworks. These poems were collected during the years I taught art history. I believe they were always good tools to teach both art appreciation and different reactions to art. Hope you will enjoy them. Saturday, April 26, 2008. Nocturne: Blue and Gold, Old Battersea Bridge. James Abbot McNeill Whistler (USA 1834-1903). Oil on canvas, 68 cm x 51 cm. Tate Gallery, London -. To James Mcneill Whistler. Under a stagnant sky,. Gloom out of gloom uncoiling into gloom,. POETS ONLINE blog

Poets Online (official site). April 13, 2018. Has an impressive body of children’s and adult poetry and other books. I had read her book of poems The Fields of Praise: New and Selected Poems. But I more recently found her book, How I Discovered Poetry. Which is written for a younger audience. How I Discovered Poetry. Nelson says that the "I' in the book is not her, but it is certainly based on her experiences from ages 4 to 14 as her family moved and lived on numerous military base homes in the 1950s.
