PragDave: Peroxide us an opportunity

http://pragdave.me/blog/2014/11/12/peroxide-us-an-opportunity

Peroxide us an opportunity. Almost 10 years ago, Ze Frank gave a Ted talk that contained a reading of 419 scam email. I’ve been getting a couple of “let us write for you” emails a day. Most are just a little sad. But, when you consider that they are actually asking to add content to my site, I think the following deserves a special mention. Try reading it aloud. With feeling. Hi Mr Thomas,. Trust me you are doing Great! Thanks, Robert Steven. Feel free to add examples of your own below. An Elixir Version...

PragDave: Proud to be an American

http://pragdave.me/blog/2014/11/25/proud-to-be-an-american

Proud to be an American. Twenty five years ago, I was an English software developer working on a project for a large US company. I’d traveled down to Atlanta with the project leader. We had a Sunday night free, so we went up to Stone Mountain to see the show. Back then, the show was a. God Bless the USA. That’s the song with the chorus that starts. I’m proud to be an American. As a Brit, I found myself with tears in my eyes. To quote Marc Cohn, “Maam, I am tonight.”. God Bless the USA. I’m in the middle ...

PragDave: Parameterizing types using pattern matching

http://pragdave.me/blog/2014/02/13/parameterizing-types-using-pattern-matching

Parameterizing types using pattern matching. Elixir’s pattern matching means we can extend the parsing of streams by abstracting out type information. A couple of days ago I wrote about using pattern matching to parse a stream of tokens. Today I came across an extension of this technique. I spend some time this evening playing with the Markdown parser. First, I created a pattern that looked at my token stream for consecutive lines of indented code. I wanted to merge these into a single. We can then use a.

PragDave: How Do You Use a Catalog?

http://pragdave.me/blog/2015/06/09/how-do-you-use-a-catalog

How Do You Use a Catalog? I’m in the middle of updating the Pragmatic Bookshelf site to be mobile-friendly and accessible. It turns out to be a lot bigger job than I’d imagined. I’ve overhauled login, signup, account management, title display, checkout, and downloads. And then I met my match. Here is the page on our existing site: https:/ pragprog.com/titles. It’s ugly, and it’s boring. That wasted about a week. What do you use it for? Can we make it more fun to find stuff? Any ideas at all? Twenty five ...

PragDave: Agile is Dead (Long Live Agility)

http://pragdave.me/blog/2014/03/04/time-to-kill-agile

Agile is Dead (Long Live Agility). Thirteen years ago, I was among seventeen middle-aged white guys who gathered at Snowbird, Utah. We were there because we shared common beliefs about developing software, and we wondered if there was a way to describe what we believed. It took less than a day to come up with a short list of values. We published those values, along with a list of practices, as the Manifesto for Agile Software Development. Over Processes and Tools. Over Contract Negotiation, and. And, unf...

Step inside my Mind… Pull up an Argument. Day 0 – Friday, 22nd July. One lesson from this trip to Tasmania; a good holiday starts one day before it starts. In the past I’ve taken taxis or trains to the airport on the day of my flight all the way from Western Sydney. This adds about an hour and a half to my trip. When the flight itself takes less than two hours, that is a pretty significant amount of time spent between places I actually want to be. Day 1 – Saturday, 23rd July. The markets run from early m...

Kata12: Best Sellers - CodeKata

http://codekata.com/kata/kata12-best-sellers

A GedankenKata this week: no code needed (although writing short prototypes might help you come to a conclusion). Say you’re writing code for a high-colume online site that sells things (something like Amazon). Your site is wildly popular, and you sell millions of items each day. The marketing department wants the home page to display a top-ten list of the best selling items over the last 24 hours, with the list being updated each hour. How would you implement this? Only update the list once per day; or.

Kata09: Back to the Checkout - CodeKata

http://codekata.com/kata/kata09-back-to-the-checkout

Kata09: Back to the Checkout. Back to the supermarket. This week, we’ll implement the code for a checkout system that handles pricing schemes such as apples cost 50 cents, three apples cost $1.30. Way back in KataOne we thought about how to model the various options for supermarket pricing. We looked at things such as three for a dollar, $1.99 per pound, and buy two, get one free. A 50 3 for 130. B 30 2 for 45. The interface to the checkout should look like:. Objectives of the Kata. To some extent, this ...

Kata17: More Business Rules - CodeKata

http://codekata.com/kata/kata17-more-business-rules

Kata17: More Business Rules. The rules that specify the overall processing of an order can be complex too, particularly as they often involve waiting around for things to happen. In Kata Sixteen we had a look at the business rules that applied when we received payment for various kinds of product. Handling payments is just a small part of the overall workflow required to process an order. For the company whose application we’re looking at, order processing looks something like:. We can receive a purchase...

Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Class factories in Coffeescript. There’s a neat trick for dynamically constructing heterogeneous classes using a single factory function in CoffeeScript. But I don’t like wearing headphones after a while they start feeling claustrophobic. After a little experimentation, I’ve come up with something that works well for me. I have music that sounds almost as immersive as using headphones, but at the same time is local to the chair where I work. The setup uses a pair of Micca COVO-S bookshelf speakers (currently about $40 on Amazon.
