August 11, 2010. 8212; prehensilereader @ 8:43 pm. I am furthering my learning of HTML. The best resource I have found is the W3schools.com and its way of showing information and then encouraging you to try it out in a little text box on the screen. A lot of the HTML learning that I really did had to do with trial and error. I would try something, open it in my browser and then change it slightly if it wasn’t what I wanted. Leave a Comment ». August 11, 2010. Learning MySQLMonitor with Joshua Mostafa. 8212; prehensilereader @ 10:22 pm. Mr Mostafa and his personality-rich tutorials really made SQL easy to learn in the MySQL monitor. I found that outside of his advice, the operators for SQL were not reliable to work in MySQL and I had to use the old trial and error process. Leave a Comment ». Feed for comments on this post. August 11, 2010. DNS is not linux for donuts. 8212; prehensilereader @ 8:21 pm. Learning about network administration is not an easy thing. The protocols never end. In making sense of this forest of acronyms and startling, hidden processes I found the most useful thing was a narrative. Reading about the conficker worm ( http:/ www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/06/the-enemy-within/8098/. Really helped me have a context within which to understand the information on Wikipedia. Walk like a librarian. Unbelievably, I had absolutely no troubles with the installation. Bruce's directions are always dead on, but I don't always follow them without making mistakes. heh heh heh. In fact, when installing Drupal, I had so. Many problems and had to clog up D2L with all kinds of goofy questions. This week was a breeze. I think it was partly due to the fact that I broke up the installation- I didn't try to do it all in one sitting. Also, partly luck. Posted by val kittell. L is for Linux.

Walk like a librarian. Battle of the CMSs. So far, we've looked at several CMSs to create our online collections. This week, I am comparing most of them- Drupal, DSpace, EPrints, the PKP Harvester, and Omeka. The comparison is from the point of view of a person using my websites. My comparison is based purely on what I can do with them. I think it will be easy to ferret out my preference. Posted by val kittell. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Walk like a librarian. So one of our first tasks in our Advanced Digital Collections course is to collect 15-20 digital items that we'll eventually use when we build our little mini online museums/archives. (I think.) I actually had a bit of trouble deciding what to collect. I'm sure I made it more difficult than it really is, of course. As it always does, my mind eventually drifted back to- what else? And I hit upon my theme- heroes. Here's a list of the items in my collection:. Superfriends" do "Office...

walk like a librarian: Consistency? What's that?
http://walklikealibrarian.blogspot.com/2010/10/consistency-whats-that.html
Walk like a librarian. I absolutely love, love, love metadata. For whatever reason, assigning names, subjects, dates, and the rest makes my heart go pitter-patter. I'm a bit over-analytical. Sometimes you can really think yourself into a hole when decided how to organize things. The closest I could get to assigning a subject to the song "The Ballad of Paladin," for example, was History- United States. That narrows it down. Posted by val kittell. Walk like a librarian. How do I feel ambivalent about thee? Oh, Drupal. I hardly knew ye. Really. I just don't get you. That's because I'd have to spend months with you just to understand how to even talk to you. And then months after that for things to really work between us. And I just don't have the time, Drupal. Not now, anyway. You're a confusing piece of work, Drupal. I managed to download a few modules, and even a theme. But did it work? Can you be that flexible, Drupal? If you can, maybe we can g...
