Religion. Belief. Cosmos.: The Death of God. Again.
http://religionandspirit.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-death-of-god-again.html
Religion. Belief. Cosmos. Two worlds meet. Or not. Monday, May 12, 2014. The Death of God. Again. The short version: God and Religion are not the same thing. Here we go again. Serious people are writing about the death of God in an Of Course kind of way. We all know, they seem to say, that God is dead. Now what do we do? Such is the tone of Alasdair Craig in a recent issue of the British magazine Prospect, in a thoughtful look at two recently published books, with references to several others. Comes at t...

Religion. Belief. Cosmos. Two worlds meet. Or not. Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Making it to the New York Times. With the growing public debate springing from the rise of militant atheism. The conversation has turned at least momentarily to some thoughtful consideration of the role that religion in peoples' lives. Now we find the conversation coming from David Brooks, writing in the New York Times. An august publication if ever there was one. 149;Secular individuals have to build their own moral philosop...

Mountain Runner: Budd Coates, Running on Air
http://ned-runner.blogspot.com/2014/03/budd-coates-running-on-air.html
Running. Learning. Breathing in the sweet mountain air. Budd Coates, Running on Air. Here's what I wrote in my review of the book on Goodreads. If you have one good idea and you share it with the world, you've paid some of the dues you owe for your time in this world. Here's a coach that has one good idea, and it's simple, effective and not at all intuitive. When you're running, with each step breathe in three times, out two. Not bad for a single idea. For now what I will say is this:. This idea has a pe...
Z.: Brain-to-Brain Coupling.
http://z-journal.blogspot.com/2015/02/brain-to-brain-coupling.html
Exploring Arts, Life, the Cosmos. From Uri Hasson's website. A garish image if ever I've seen one. This has so many implications my mind reels, careening from thought to thought, idea to idea. I can't possibly write them all down. For now I've settled on making a note in Z Journal, contemplating the power of Art, capital A. Michael Shermer, on Reason.com. My research is part of a growing trend in neuroscience towards the study of brain responses to natural real life events," says Professor Hasson. From p...
Z.: J.W.W.Turner.
http://z-journal.blogspot.com/2015/02/jwwturner.html
Exploring Arts, Life, the Cosmos. Here's a hint of why the work of Turner has been considered so important in the development of painting. Broad swashes of color, a little linework, some careful and strategically placed silhouettes, and we have an image powerful, evoc.ative, suggestive. This is poetry of the highest order, spare and cutting right to the heart. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Boulder County, Colorado. View my complete profile. Ideas, Images, Words. Religion. Mountain Runner: Going out Fast. Or slow.
http://ned-runner.blogspot.com/2014/12/going-out-fast-or-slow.html
Running. Learning. Breathing in the sweet mountain air. Going out Fast. Or slow. Shared by a runner who calls this her nemesis. There was a time I could pretty much take off running right out of the locker room or truck door. My first mile or so would be a bit slower at a given heart rate, but it wasn't anything that really called attention to itself. Along with other changes I see as time goes by, I've quietly filed it away as Well, this is what happens as a runner moves into another decade of life.
:: Exploring Social Systems: Open Systems, Closed Systems.
http://exploringsystems.blogspot.com/2014/04/open-systems-closed-systems.html
Continuing thoughts on the way systems work. Thursday, April 24, 2014. Open Systems, Closed Systems. One might say, as does Wikipedia. That open social systems encourage a non-representational and non-referential post-humanist approach that actualizes the complexity of reality in a non-deterministic framework. I actually have no idea what that statement means. Or one might get a feel for an Open social system by contemplating its opposite. At Yuma Territorial Prison, our i ntrepid travelers report,.
:: Exploring Social Systems: A Masterwork of Systems Thinking.
http://exploringsystems.blogspot.com/2014/03/blog-post.html
Continuing thoughts on the way systems work. Tuesday, March 25, 2014. A Masterwork of Systems Thinking. As cultural anthropology it provides the same level of explanatory power for understanding our cultural differences that the theory of evolution provided for understanding biology, or that the theory of plate tectonics did for understanding planetary-scale geologic processes. Assembling this puzzle is a pleasure every step along the way. Each piece is a work of art in itself. And the whole is s...When ...

Continuing thoughts on the way systems work. Saturday, April 5, 2014. One person's definition: 12 Living Systems Principles. My, how the enterprise has grown. When I began my work and my thinking about systems, the concept was radical enough I felt a like a bit of a revolutionary. Now we have someone like Linda Booth Sweeney. Harvard University Graduate School of Education, who is part of a trend of turning it into a technology. A relationship of mutual influence. Circular and self-repeating processes pr...

:: Exploring Social Systems: Further Thoughts on Silos.
http://exploringsystems.blogspot.com/2014/12/further-thoughts-on-silos.html
Continuing thoughts on the way systems work. Sunday, December 28, 2014. Further Thoughts on Silos. Writing about silos moved my thinking along. Not long after putting the posting. Together, as I continued to ponder the ideas, I realized that understanding the individual components of a system is an invaluable aspect of comprehending the full workings. Clearly there is a role for specialization. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Matter at Hand. Boulder County, Colorado. From pilgrim stock with famil...
Mountain Runner: Urban trail run.
http://ned-runner.blogspot.com/2014/05/urban-trail-run.html
Running. Learning. Breathing in the sweet mountain air. Under a springtime sky. With the changing of the season, trail running has been on my mind. While the athletic activity in running is rewarding to me, at heart I run to be outside enjoying this beautiful world we've been given. On my off-days from running I hike and I bike. It's all sweet. Often in the lowlands of Boulder Valley (elevation 5600 feet or so) I'll run neighborhoods and enjoy the landscaping, the university campus. With our garden at el...
