An American begins expat life in Qatar. Still working on it. I am Filipina-American. Dual identity has it’s pluses and minuses. In Doha, it tends to be more minus than plus. Whenever I get into a taxi, drivers immediately speak to me in Malay and Talalog. I shake my head and politely assert: “I do not understand. I cannot speak.”. An American begins expat life in Qatar. On the Cheap in the Sandpit. Before my trip to Cyprus, the Gulf states experienced one of the worst sandstorms in years.
