Behind the Burning of the Bridge. The Borough of Marietta is a small river town beside the Susquehanna River and was incorporated in 1812 from the towns of Waterford and New Haven. Marietta was a major anthracite iron industry center in the United States during the nineteenth century due to the access of iron ore by way of canals and railroads. 2008 Rivertownes PA USA.

Since the early 1800's ferries have connected the Rivertownes. Later the connection was made via bridges, six of them in fact. Over the years two of the bridges were destroyed by nature, while one was burned during the Civil War to prevent the Confederate advance into Lancaster County.
