Just finished reading Mario Vargas Llosa’s Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. Which featured a radio sound effects performer called Puddler. Walter Murch’s The Conversations. With Michael Ondaatje is probably my favourite non-fiction book. And now The Guardian have done an extended piece on sound design genius Skip Lievsay, titled Rain is sizzling bacon, cars are lions roaring. Tears | Sally Skinner

https://sallyskinner.wordpress.com/2014/12/07/tears

This photo series by Rose-Lynn Fisher captures tears of grief, joy, laughter and irritation under the microscope. Tears aren’t just water. They’re primarily made up of water, salts, antibodies and lysozymes, but the composition depends on the type of tear. There are three main types – basal tears, reflex tears, and weeping tears. As you can see, they can look incredibly different when evaporate d and placed under a microscope… More here. From → ideas. Burning Questions of the Internet →. Htt 3 weeks ago.

Burning Questions of the Internet | Sally Skinner

https://sallyskinner.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/burning-questions-of-the-internet

Burning Questions of the Internet. Search predictions – those auto-generated terms that pop up as you type into a search box – can be useful. I’ve recently discovered they can also be funny. Accidentally structured like perfect jokes; some are funny-. And some offer a glimpse of an individual searcher, somewhere in the Googleverse, that’s so tragi-comic it makes you laugh out loud. This was the first time I noticed…. From → musings. Fascinated by Foley →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Htt 3 weeks ago.

Armchair of a Bookologist: Love in a Cold Climate

http://armchairofabookologist.blogspot.com/2014/04/love-in-cold-climate.html

Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Monday, April 21, 2014. Love in a Cold Climate. I have seen a movie version of this book already - it wasn't bad, and so when I saw this book in the cheap-as-chips Penguin edition I decided to get it. Anyway, the point is, I have finally picked the book up and read it from cover to cover in less than 24 hours. Happiest time of my life. The only thing was one got rather tired of the taste of mut...

Armchair of a Bookologist: last ride

http://armchairofabookologist.blogspot.com/2014/03/last-ride.html

Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Saturday, March 29, 2014. I have had an exceptionally busy few weeks. And I have not been reading much, unfortunately. But I did get a chance to watch an Australian film from 2009 called Last Ride. Which was pretty much forced on me by a colleague who said he knows that I don't like being forced to read or watch things but that in this case the movie was so good that he was not giving me a choice.

Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Wednesday, October 1, 2014. One month ago today, we published our September issue of Halfway Down the Stairs. And I forgot to tell you. As Paul Simon says:. 8220;I know a man. He came from my home town. He wore his passion for his woman. Like a thorny crown. I live in fear. My love for you's so overpowering. I'm afraid that I will disappear'. We've got some lovely writing on that site this quarter.

Armchair of a Bookologist: it's a long way down

http://armchairofabookologist.blogspot.com/2014/07/its-long-way-down.html

Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Saturday, July 19, 2014. It's a long way down. I have been absent for a while - probably because I have not been reading particularly often, unless you count that we read Little Women. This month's book club selection was much better:. Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down. I've actually read this one before, but knew that I would want to read it again. The two main things I admire about this book are that:.

Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Because I am a glutton for punishment, I read the fragment of Jane Austen's unfinished novel The Watsons. Again, about a month ago. I knew I shouldn't have done it. It was devastating to get to the end of the few chapters and have to stop - it wasn't perfected, but it was so promising, and I am so sad that she decided not to finish it! Three stars from me. Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Monday, January 9, 2012. I came across this epitaph to literature in an article in one of my favourite magazines. Composed by my nation's Prime Minister for a 'literature heritage trail':. This Literary Heritage Trail celebrates writers, poets and playwrights who have contributed to this young country’s cultural and historical life. I hope you will take the opportunity to be part of this journey.

Armchair of a Bookologist. In which I review books and ponder bookology (and write about other things too). Sunday, January 27, 2013. I have just finished reading Fanny Burney's Evelina. For the first time, and I found it highly enjoyable. One of my new year's resolutions this year was only to read really good or really fun books, and this was not a bad place to start. As the blogger points out, quoting an introduction written by Edward Bloom, this novel is at least an improvement on a familiar theme:.

Sally's Kenya Blog

Sunday, October 5, 2008. Yesterday, my first full day back home, I awoke with a start and bounded out of bed, absolutely certain that I was going to be late for breakfast. Surely the rooster had betrayed me and forgotten his wake-up call. Hey, what's all this furniture doing here and who moved the bathroom? The trip seems almost surreal now. Wasn't it only yesterday that we started planning this trip and meeting online and getting to know each other? Now as I unpack my luggage, do the laundry (finally!

At the Kitchen Table: Recipes, Food Tips, Rice Cooker Cooking

How to Cook Rice. Sally’s Kitchen – The Story. It was summer. It was hot. And we needed to eat. My choices were:. Cook on the stove and heat the house more. Go out to dinner. Fire up the barbecue. I discovered another solution – a simple, safe way to cook that is fast, cheap, convenient, and delicious. Our son came up with the solution. The solution is a rice cooker. A rice cooker turns itself down to warm and not burn the food if he gets distracted. It‘s all one-step. It was simple. I just threw all...
