Monitoring of Santorini volcano has been conducted for some years by groups of scientists both in Greece, and elsewhere. Much of the basic information on the instruments that have been used to monitor the volcano can be found on the ISMOSAV. Website. Santorini is an active volcano, although it has been in a dormant state since the end of the last eruption in 1950. Santorini is also in a tectonically active part of the world, prone to earthquakes, and the steep cliffs around the caldera are also susceptible to small rockfalls and landslides, which can occur without warning. All of the historical eruptions have erupted lava of approximately the same composition, and it is likely that this sort of eruptive behaviour has been continuing on and off for the past few thousand years. For this reason, it is expected that future activity on the Kameni islands will follow a similar pattern to the historical eruptions. 10 Jan 2 Feb 1950.
