Not Quite Scilly: This and That
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2017/01/this-and-that.html
Friday, 6 January 2017. Late on Wednesday afternoon I added Water Rail. I thought it might be interesting to post photos of the two jacks I caught the other day. They are both about 4lb, but notice how different their markings are. I think I'm right in saying that they more or less retain the same patterns as they grow. This is just one of the reasons that they're such great fish to catch; they're simply stunning. Time before I get back in the saddle. I don't often get ill and I'm not very good at it.

Not Quite Scilly: Birds, but not Birding
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2016/12/birds-but-not-birding.html
Thursday, 22 December 2016. Birds, but not Birding. Currently hanging out to dry in the garden are a landing net and weigh sling, while an unhooking mat lies airing on the gravel, damp side uppermost. An angler will know the significance of this. A birdwatcher, meanwhile, will know the significance of this. More specifically, a starving Robin. Tutted loudly and bobbed up and down a bit. It then cocked an eye at my apologetic offering and checked for anything wriggly. Eventually, with a melodramat...It wa...

Not Quite Scilly: Things to Do on a Bank Holiday
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2017/01/things-to-do-on-bank-holiday.html
Tuesday, 3 January 2017. Things to Do on a Bank Holiday. Of course there are already too many other clues in both this post and recent NQS in general to make that question much of a challenge, but how many places in the UK could you be fishing for pike and see this particular combination: Brent Goose. Of course, there must be loads of places where you might see most. Of that lot. But where else could you see all. Now that is a challenge. 4 January 2017 at 08:13. Cue one astonished Dick Middleton. So is b...

Not Quite Scilly: October 2016
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, 27 October 2016. A First Love Rekindled. Rob in 1995, aged 12, with a hefty perch from Startops Reservoir, Tring. Rob is still mad keen today, and his enthusiasm very infectious. His current circumstances find him working right here in Bridport, so I'm not surprised that he's rekindled my passion for an old flame and got me involved in planning a little fishing 'campaign' with him. So in recent weeks we have walked the bank a couple of times in preliminary exploration. On Wednesday afternoo...

Not Quite Scilly: Fishing, But Not...
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2017/01/fishing-but-not.html
Monday, 9 January 2017. Fishing, But Not. Although I'm still loaded with virus my intention today was work.until I saw the rainy forecast. And then my intention became fishing. I thought I might sit quietly beneath my brolly and nurse myself back to health with a massive pike. But things didn't quite pan out that way. Etc but some were proper quality! At one stage I was fishing virtually underneath the M5, and glancing behind me noticed four egrets. So, confident of the ID at last, and not yet being a su...

Not Quite Scilly: New Year Plans...
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2016/12/new-year-plans.html
Saturday, 31 December 2016. Why is the start of a new calendar year so beguiling? Loads of them are, like me, verging on doddery, and I think they are missing a trick. Perhaps they lack inspiration? A quick review of one or two NQS cycling posts might be needed. All of them plainly convey the sheer joy provided by two wheels and a steep gradient. And who wants to go to their grave unable to say that they unashamedly wore lycra in public? Bike Lane. Muck. Standard winter fare. Etc, plus a Hoopoe. Gav, Ill...

Not Quite Scilly: Murder on the Common
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2017/01/murder-on-common.html
Tuesday, 10 January 2017. Murder on the Common. Anyway, all I can say is that over the years I have shared this episode with very few, because I'm not proud of it, and yet now for some reason I am doing quite the opposite. The story begins with a green parrot in the tree outside my window in early May. I could identify many birds, but had no idea what this was. Surely an aviary escape? As well as what else I could expect to see in and around the grounds of our hall of residence. Roding Woodcock. In that ...

Not Quite Scilly: October 2015
http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2015_10_01_archive.html
Friday, 30 October 2015. I used to write a blog called 'Not Quite Scilly'. It was a birding blog, with occasional digressions elsewhere. It related the activities and opinions of a middle-aged bloke based in East Devon, and mostly those of a birdy nature. I enjoyed writing it, and by all accounts many enjoyed reading it. Then, for a variety of reasons, I killed it. If this seems paradoxical.well.I know. Of course, I did wonder how exactly to begin a new beginning. Eventually I came up with this:. I brief...
