Tuesday, 28 April 2015. This is my version of the calendar included in the Open Studios Literature. And this is the official one. but note that I am only open until 3pm on weekdays because of the school run. You'll find my online entry here. This building and its roof inscription give the painting its name. As far as I can make out, Pickfords no longer occupy this building, which is in Nottingham (the elevated view is from Nottingham Castle). In fact, it appears - from Google's Street View images...Unusu...

Amanda Bates' Art Blog: Skewball
http://blog.amandabatesart.co.uk/2015/08/skewball.html
Tuesday, 4 August 2015. Last weekend I went to Newbury Races (mainly for the sake of the fibreglass horse statue that we painted at the school). There is clearly a modern influence on my picture of this C18th racehorse. I knew the rather fanciful Peter Paul and Mary song (Skewball was a racehorse/And I wish he was mine/He never drank water/He only drank wine). Then I discovered the False Lights song of the same name; it was a completely differert song. I used bits out of several of these songs.

Thursday, 25 June 2015. Swan House - diddy oil. This was a spur of the moment plein air. A tiny one - only 10 x 15 cm - and I only needed to walk across the road. So I came up with an impromptu minimal kit:. Wednesday, 24 June 2015. Botallack Count Houses and Newbury Lock. Two more - rather watery in theme - line and washes. Both were done from photographs using dip pens, acylic inks (sepia and white) and watercolour. Sunday, 21 June 2015. St Nic's Art Exhibition. St Nic's in Newbury. Friday, 19 June 2015.

Amanda Bates' Art Blog: May 2015

Sunday, 31 May 2015. These are the five inexpensive knives that my husband bought out of curiosity from eBay as a set. I got a bit of acrylic on the handles when I used them to paint Family Circles. This is a first-impression review. I can't tell you if they will last as well as a more expensive knife. But that price won't break many piggy banks. This particular knife can be acquired for under £4, as can may others in the Winsor and Newton range. Worth shelling out for a selection of nicer knives, but th...

Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Unable to Lunch Today. Cole Porter kills off two of his characters in this tragic standalone song-story. Miss Otis - both culprit and victim - is too polite not to send her apologies. I couldn't resist adding a visual pun in the centre of the page. Tell me what you think!
