Blogside Inn: March 2008
http://blogsideinn.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 2, 2008. A new Rite of Spring? It must be spring, since we're beginning to see those quasi-pagan rituals emerge here and there. Here. Is a great one, by way of Flanders in Belgium.care for some goldfish with your beverage? A Really "Bad" Girl. The artist Herndon Ely, her friend and caretaker, said she died of natural causes. She said people were pretty nonplussed, as you'd expect," Ely said. "She and Ray would also do another bit where they'd reenact the shower scene from 'Psycho.' ". In a ...

Blogside Inn: October 2007
http://blogsideinn.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 27, 2007. The Lives of Others. With mid-terms behind me, I was able to watch The Lives of Others this weekend. Scary stuff. The fact that the Stasi could bug an entire apartment in 20 minutes is mind boggling. It's cool that the staunch Stasi guy developed a conscious in the end and that's all I'll say. Well done and so worth the Academy Award. Now, if you want to see a prime example of French colonialism, check out The Battle of Algiers (yet another movie rec. for another class). Direc...

Wednesday, July 11, 2007. Godspeed, Lady Bird Johnson. It also meant enjoying the highs, like LBJ's victories in his Congressional and Senatorial campaigns, and then trying to pick up the pieces and build her husband up to go back into the arena again after the losses, like the first Senate campaign against Coke Stevenson. Lyndon Johnson had a pendulum that swung so wide, it must have given her whiplash trying to keep him on an even keel. Tuesday, July 10, 2007. Monday, July 9, 2007. Brazil's Statue of C...

Sunday, May 27, 2007. O God, O Venus, O Mercury, patron of thieves,. Give me in due time, I beseech you, a little tobacco-shop. With the little bright boxes. Piled up neatly on the shelves. And the loose fragrant cavendish. And the bright Virginia. Loose under the bright glass cases,. And a pair of scales not too greasy. And the whores dropping in for a word or two in passing,. For a flip word, and to tidy their hair a bit. O God, O Venus, patron of thieves,. Lend me a little tobacco-shop. Has so graphic...

Saturday, April 12, 2008. I've been in the salt mine for awhile, so this blog has been less than active, but I've come back up for air, just in time for finals 2008, of which this is the first to be posted:. Blogside Inn: Some Budapest basics, part I

Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Some Budapest basics, part I. By popular demand, some Budapest fundamentals:. What are the foundations of Budapest? We know that New York is New York because of geography, the desire to make lots and lots of money, the appearance of visionaries at every key moment, and the acceptance of newcomers. Belfast and Londonderry became the cities they are today largely because of the Protestant-Catholic conflict. One of the major bridges in Budapest is the Freedom Bridge. If you driv...

Friday, April 25, 2008. Budapest basics, part II. Compared with New York, which had its first major settlements in the l700s, Budapest is as old as the sea. In any case although it was not the capital in St. Stephen’s day, Budapest remembers its King Saint in many places. King St. Stephen is a major symbol of a fr...It says that Bu...

Blogside Inn: June 2007
http://blogsideinn.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 30, 2007. Go get this film! This version is fictionalized, and is a bit much in some places, but I ended up enjoying it- it's another great film about World War I. You can get a brief synopsis here. In the blackest black numbers on the calendar- June 28. Once again, the loss of focus on dates caused me to fail to comment on the most fateful of days- June 28. I'm not sure that people properly appreciate this date in European history, so a brief review is in order:. On JUNE 28, l9l9, the Ver...
