A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. January 24, 2015. On the subject of gluing, I’ve discovered silicone brushes. Work a treat and easy to clean. I’m using Titebond III on this job. All the 6-foot boards are done now, I’m halfway through doing the first eight-foot one. I’m glad I tested the concept on the shorter boards first. Flattening a large board →. A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. New workshop and standing desk started. January 17, 2013. This is the idea for the desk, done in Sketch-Up. It’s to go in a corner and fits into a one-metre square footprint. That deep conduit along the wall is a challenge for the corner support. Egg cups with captive rings. Proudly powered by WordPress. A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. My name is Viv Mitchell and I love woodwork. I’m based in Winnersh, Berkshire, UK. I’ve been doing woodwork all my life, but in a very amateur sort of way. I’ve never had a woodworking lesson, except when I signed up to a 2-day course at Axminster Power Tools. Mostly it’s been a case of figuring out how to do things as I go along. I find that very satisfying – who cares if others have discovered it before me? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Notify me of fo...

A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. February 5, 2015. Well, you remember I said in a recent post that it’s essential to hold the board down while you level it? Make sure your cutter is sharp, otherwise you’ll be sanding out tiny gouges in the wood afterwards. I used a dish cutter because it has a flat bottom but curved sides, so any gaps or inaccuracies from the gantry are at least quite smooth and will sand out more easily. Flattening a large board. A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. May 31, 2015. I’m delighted to say that the cabinet is finally finished and delivered. It was a long haul, and I’ve learned a great deal from it. It’s huge – eight feet wide – this is the first time I’ve been able to get far enough away from it to get the whole thing into the picture. But at least if I do anything like it again it will happen a lot more quickly now that I’ve learned more about how large oak boards behave. March 6, 2015. February 5, 2015.

A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. March 6, 2015. One step forward, two steps back. Just cutting a rebate in one of the sides to locate the shelf, and realised that the side had bowed across the grain by at least two millimetres – bummer! And I had already cut it to width! Will this oak never stop moving? So anyway, this meant that I had to re-do the front fillets (lips? Puzzle Cabinet →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Your email address will not be published. A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. The Mah Jong box is finished! September 19, 2012. Meanwhile, here’s the finished box, finally! I should point out right away that the most impressive thing about this box, the inlays of the West and East Wind characters, was done by master luthier and all-round good guy Cabell Fearn. A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. Flattening a large board. January 26, 2015. At first it didn’t seem to work very well; I tried going along and across and generally scribbling around with the router, but the result was a very uneven surface to which the belt sander was hardly equal. Since this is the ‘wrong’ side of the board it doesn’t matter – it won’t show – so I was undeterred. No bad thing; the ROS is much gentler, even on a coarse grit. More on flattening →. A place for everything. Egg cups with captive rings. February 22, 2013. Standing desk in use, complete with fairy lights. Tip: always use at least two clamps, as far apart as possible but even if you can only get them an inch apart that’s good enough to stop the piece from pivoting on a single clamp. Clamps aren’t shown in this picture, but the jig is nearly a metre long so there’s a good chance for every setup that you can get a pair of clamps in somewhere. I finished the desk with Tru-Oil, which is mad...
