June 19, 2015. Spent a couple of hours on the allotment this evening…. Decided to get on with sewing some more lettuce seed, the same ‘Blonde Maraicheri’ I planted with the green beans. I’ve also covered the planted seeds with mesh and utilised three supports from a polythene cloche to support it, securing into the ground with tent pegs. The lettuce seeds sown with the green beans are making an appearance, I just hope I’ve done enough to prevent them being nibbled by visiting snails. June 15, 2015. Altho...

May 3, 2015. Wind playing with the garlic stems. It’s one of those days when I’m just not sure of the weather’s intentions. The forecast report shows the sun shining tomorrow morning, so I’ll put off planting the main crop potatoes till then. I’m off for a swim now, the video is from last Sunday. April 26, 2015. Don’t panic, the shallot seeds have been sown. The pea shoots have made an appearance. And the Mazur lettuce seedlings have also emerged. Even found time to sit and enjoy the sun. April 20, 2015.

We are what we eat and what we do. Preparing for Spring . February 4, 2014. April 7, 2014. Although it has not been a cold winter it has been wet and windy above normal. Usually by now we would have started to prepare the ground ready for planting at the allotments , but not this year . We are way behind and it is really disheartening ,but as you know the growing seasons have a way of catching up in the end . The ground is water logged and the only thing I reckon we should be growing is rice! Put them in...

We are what we eat and what we do. My broody hen 11 days on. May 22, 2014. October 19, 2014. It has been a week since I reported on my lovely broody chicken Shadow and although there is a plan in progress there has only been a slight improvement. What does seem to be the opinion from several chicken owners is that Speckledy chickens go broody a lot , by that I mean could be several times a year. .Why didn’t I know this? The latest picture of my broody girl Shadow. My broody hen day four . Fill in your de...

We are what we eat and what we do. June 20, 2014. It is strawberry time again and you can’t beat freshly picked strawberries from the garden or allotment plot . Below are a few ideas to use them if they have managed to get home . Easy strawberry ice cream. 600g strawberries (plus 50g extra for chunks if you want them). The proportions are equal measures of fruit to cream and 1/3 the weight in sugar so adapt it to suit the amount of strawberries you have). Mix the strawberry puree, cream and sugar together.

We are what we eat and what we do. May 10, 2014. I live about 30 miles from London in the countryside and it is amazing the wonderful scenery we have around us and as far as I am concerned live in the best country in the world . It was a bit of a wet, windy and undecided day today so I decided to walk through the woods behind my house to look for bluebells. I certainly was not disappointed. These were the first few I found as I went into the wood so I was certain there would be more. Our garden is full o...

We are what we eat and what we do. Mixing the New Girls. January 26, 2014. April 6, 2014. It has been two weeks now since Shadow and Willow the two new girls joined the Oakwood team. They have been separate from the two old girls for most of this time and only a few incidents of Bonny causing a fuss when she spotted them. So we thought it was time! Bonnie does not want to go down a step in the pecking order. Shadow the Speckled chick is much more timid and stands back till she is sure there is no threat ...
