A Subtle Review

Friday, September 5, 2008. There's a line in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead that says something to the effect of "audiences know what to expect. And that's all they're prepared to believe." That pretty much sums up why I loved this movie. Some screenwriters put in terms of an ending being inevitable, yet surprising. No matter how undeserving or inappropriate their desires we must have each character get what they want in the end. Because we Americans? What's so baffling and amazing about this movi...

A Subtle Review: Get Smart

http://www.subtlereview.blogspot.com/2008/06/get-smart.html

Friday, June 27, 2008. I'll admit. The real reason I wanted to see this movie was because of the preview where Steve Carell. Flings the phone receiver. At the guy while yelling, "I think you forgot the element of SURPRIIIIIAAAHH. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. I've never seen the original show, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well done this movie was. And yet. Somehow, by a strange combination of factors the movie seems to fall forgettably. Maxwell Smart ( Carell. Who knows and who cares?

A Subtle Review: The Happening

http://www.subtlereview.blogspot.com/2008/06/happening_27.html

Friday, June 27, 2008. I don't like scary movies. Period. But it wasn't until I was sitting in the theater waiting for the show to start that it occurred to me that I was voluntarily going to see a "scary" movie. Maybe it was the influence of M. Night Shyamalan (the Shyamalan effect I call it) but I was actually kind of looking forward to being a little scared. Posted by Scratch Subtle. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Eagle vs. Shark.

A Subtle Review: Elsa & Fred

http://www.subtlereview.blogspot.com/2008/08/elsa-fred.html

Friday, August 8, 2008. One of my favorite things about Seattle is the number of independent movie theaters at my disposal. The other day I saw Elsa and Fred at one of these theaters, mainly because it was touted as showing "For One Week Only! Which caught my attention. And implied that it must be at least semi-decent. Hooray for the power of suggestion! Scenes, but you're so won over with the characters each finding new meaning in their lives. That it's easy to overlook. Send Their Love.) In this mo...

A Subtle Review: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

http://www.subtlereview.blogspot.com/2008/09/rosencrantz-and-guildenstern-are-dead.html

Friday, September 5, 2008. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. The first time I saw this it was as a play in Bath. What's that? Yes, that would be in a foreign country. I remember thinking, "wow, that was really good. Entertaining, fun, and smart." The End. I didn't think much else about it. In this retelling Rosencrantz and Guildenstern know nothing more than the information presented in Hamlet. They are as characters brought to life, having no knowledge beyond their own role in the story. Th...They ...

A Subtle Review: July 2008

http://www.subtlereview.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 3, 2008. To seeing this movie for a long time. Which is why I waited until it got to the dollar theater. I just couldn't bear the thought of watching Tina Fey, who is one of my favorite comedy actors, being subjugated. To the strained writing and cheap laughs I was sure the movie was filled with. In my mind the movie became more of a statement. Of the quality of roles for women in the film industry, particularly for funny women. Amused throughout the film ( Poehler's. To me that I've never...

scratch subtle: July 2008

http://scratchsubtle.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 17, 2008. I recently had a conversation. With a friend about the implications of living alone, and whether the ups were worth the downs. Well, something happened yesterday that convinced me I, personally, can not be expected to live alone without some contingencies. As I sat barefoot at my computer the culprit sauntered into my room without even the decency to recognize that he was out of place and unwelcome. And I tell you, if EVER a spider looked smug it was this one. After some failed s...

The rest of the publication is still in editing and the published version isn't done yet but I was too impressed with our understanding of techy. Check out all my majesty on this page. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Anything For A Story. For awhile, the chic parent-concern was the negative influence of Harry Potter on children. Particularly the glamorization of witches, wizards and other sorcery stuffs. But I’ve found another, possibly more disturbing side effect of Potter-love that evidenced itself in my 10 year old niece, who took the time to sit down and interview Miyagi-san . . . as Rita Skeeter. For those of you not in the know, here’s a summary of Rita Skeeter’s profile. In an eff...

Tuesday, March 11, 2008. How to get on my good side. Step 1: See me at some point during my busy day and engage in a wholly. Forgettable conversation. Preferably referencing our work, class, bongo lessons etc. Step 2: That night in my dream accuse me of always showing up for work (class, synchronized swimming) hours late and generally tell me what a bad employee I am and therefore an awful human being. Following these simple steps will ensure that for at least the following 24 hours I will bring you your...

http://scratchsubtle.blogspot.com/2009/10/24-days-of-miyagi-me-frozen-pizza.html

Tuesday, October 13, 2009. 24 Days of Miyagi and Me: The Frozen Pizza. It was late. We were hungry. There's no shame in a frozen pizza now and then. Shrug* "I don't know . . ? I guess we could . . .". I don't think it's bad . . .". Should we just . . ? And then we promptly picked up the pizza, then picked up all the TOPPINGS from the pizza, plopped them back on and proceeded to eat the whole thing as if nothing had happened. http://scratchsubtle.blogspot.com/2009/10/23-days-of-miyagi-me-dog-hands.html

Tuesday, October 13, 2009. 23 Days of Miyagi and Me: Dog Hands. In mid January Miyagi and Me were in that magical place between being together and BEING TOGETHER. We went to dinner at friends house and during a game of Apples to Apples we sneakily held hands under the table. There are few things in this life as wonderful as holding the hand of the guy you like in a sneaky manner that the rest of the room is unaware of. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I Peed A Little. Good morning, apple cider vinegar. May 31, 2015. Ginger turmeric apple cider vinegar drink. I’m a pretty big fan of apple cider vinegar. Specifically, I love the taste of it. Ever since I had Bragg’s apple cider drinks. Are there health benefits to drinking apple cider vinegar? For the longest time I was just creating my own ginger, APV, and stevia mix. Basic and to the point. I don’t really remember why I did this, but it one day I decided to add turmeric powder to the ginger while it was seepin...Add t...
