The SIL&MM opened its doors in 1999, but its story began long before that year. Segment about the museum. The Turners, self-taught historians, amazed the film crew with the depth of their knowledge of boat-building, fishing and the general history of the island. Much remains to be done, and many new plans are afoot, but the Museum Committee is confident that we will once again be actively telling the story of the island's history.

SAVE THE BETSY L. Is the last surviving work-boat built on Swan's Island. Built in 1979 by Charles Joslin, she was used for lobstering by her late owner, Burton Wheaton. She stands as the last survivor of a century and a half of masterful boat-building which made Swan's Island famous in the late 1800s. May never sail the waters around Swan's Island again, she will sit proudly above Mackerel Cove as a memorial to the many wonderful schooners and boats who were born here. Rentals on a Maine Island. Welcome to Swan's Island, Maine. Swans Island is located Down East along the rugged Maine coast nestled close to Acadia National Park. It is a six-mile car ferry ride to a place "far from the madding crowd" - a place with no golf courses, no movie theaters, and only one "mall", the island transfer station, which islanders affectionately call the North Mall. The island supports three small lobstering villages with a winter population of around 300 people.
