swirl + repeat

Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Friends frequently ask, what's the right way to go about tasting a wine? If you've walked into a tasting room, you've seen how this strange ritual goes down: Tasting room attendant / wine educator / purveyor of liquid poetry administers a splash of the good stuff into a glass that is preferably clear and free of any lipstick marks from the previous user. What you're looking for at this point is, first, the color - is it golden? A deep rich red? Sunday, June 6, 2010. The tanks have...

swirl + repeat: October 2009

http://swirlandrepeat.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 26, 2009. Tasting Notes: 2005 Kalyra MC2 Santa Ynez Valley. Yes, Kalyra was a Sideways. Winery, but it is a Santa Ynez gem and favorite among many of my other wine-drinking friends in the Southland. The winery was started by an Australian who made his way over to Santa Barbara, and they have made some pretty interesting wines that are imbued with the label's offbeat spirit. MC2 is a Merlot blend, mixed with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc in the Bordeaux style. 343 N Refugio Rd. I was r...

Wednesday, November 18, 2009. The Place: The MUST. 118 W 5th Street (at Spring). Tasted: 2007 Layer Cake Primitivo. Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Tasting Notes: Chappellet 2007 Mountain Cuvee. Choosing wine for a party of strangers is never an easy task, but with helpful guidance from our waiter (Joseph the musician), we picked out this gem from BOA. At $29 off of the winery's online shop. I'd call it a great value; some other searching turned up alleged $25 price tags. Thursday, November 5, 2009.

Monday, April 12, 2010. It was a quick tasting day, but J and L were good sports about waking up bright and early to make the drive from San Francisco. The first stop was Hop Kiln. Where I was surprised to learn their winemaker, whose first bottles are just starting to be poured, was only 26. The distinctive building made it a great setting, and we also enjoyed seeing the various mustards, vinegars, and other gourmet delights they were selling inside. Thursday, April 8, 2010. Between browsing numerous co...

swirl + repeat: where you from, where you goin??

http://swirlandrepeat.blogspot.com/2010/04/where-you-from-where-you-goin.html

Thursday, April 8, 2010. Where you from, where you goin? I began with the goal of exploring. And its importance in winemaking, but what follows is more of a random musing on (dis)location. Between browsing numerous coffee shop menus, hoarding fragrant teas from various locales and checking my watch to make sure it is, actually, the time and day I'm assuming it is, I've been giving some thought to what it means to be from. Wines in this way carry an enviable sense of place, but that strict definition by p...

http://grubhunter.blogspot.com/2009/12/battle-fried-chicken-part-i.html

Chronicles of a grub hunter. Tuesday, December 29, 2009. Battle Fried Chicken Part I. Epicurios.com recently compiled a list of food trends to come in 2010. Topping the list is Fried Chicken, which as you all know is one of my favorite things to eat in the world! And yes, Fried Chicken is capitalized! With its crispy skin, moist meat, decadent flavors, AND myriad of sides that can be eaten with it, what is not to LOVE? Saizo (Sunnyvale): Chicken Karaage. San Tung (SF): Dry Fried Chicken. Grub Hunter: Santouka Ramen!

http://grubhunter.blogspot.com/2010/02/santouka-ramen.html

Chronicles of a grub hunter. Tuesday, February 2, 2010. As you all know, I am always on the hunt for good grub. One of my favorite comfort foods is Ramen. I was delighted to find out from AndHua that Santouka opened recently in the "new" Mitsuwa of San Jose. At first I was perplexed to learn of a "new" Mitsuwa. I knew of one Mitsuwa, but it was definitely not new. Our Conversation went a little like this. A: What are you up to? L: I have training all week and am going to get lunch in San Jose. At this po...

Swirl & Scramble

Jan 7, 2014. Im back from a warm and delicious escapade to Mexico. It was my second time to this wonderful country and once again it did not disappoint! I discovered a whole world of incredible foods- yes, there is so, so much more then just burritos and tacos :) Ill be sharing pictures from my trip and all the goodness that I ate soon! A wonderful invention I kept coming across the blogosphere all throughout 2013. It is easy peasy, versatile and just as satisfying as real rice- if not better! Dec 9, 2013.
