The Circle Jerks

Five birders thrash their local shrubbery for a whole year, to little real effect. One of them does it using a camel, but none of them is into cars. Thursday, 13 December 2012. Showing very nicely at Emirate’s Palace tonight bringing us right back to where we pretty much started on January 10. Presumably the same birds and easy to find with only 3 Water Pips. To hide amongst. Winter birding out here can be pretty much like that –just two shrikes. Today, but one was Masked. But one being Hume’s. First up,...

The Circle Jerks: Spinning Around

http://www.thecirclejerks.blogspot.com/2012/12/spinning-around.html

Five birders thrash their local shrubbery for a whole year, to little real effect. One of them does it using a camel, but none of them is into cars. Sunday, 2 December 2012. 5 hours of scrub clearance at the Nunnery Lakes. This morning failed to yield the hoped-for fly-over Peregrine, or any other outside chances of an addition to the list. 4 Waxwings did fly over instead but unfortunately they chose to do so when we were wielding loppers rather than bins, resulting in less-than-satisfactory views. Opera...

Five birders thrash their local shrubbery for a whole year, to little real effect. One of them does it using a camel, but none of them is into cars. Tuesday, 28 February 2012. Back in the game. Of course, even at the time I knew that this. Was slight hyperbole; 5 Isabelline Wheatears don’t really constitute spring. But out here in the UAE, 5 Pied Wheatears. Do, especially when backed up with 2 Woodchats. And Menetries’s Warbler. Lingering, plus good scores of Corn Buntings. 6), Tawny Pips. Only a couple ...

The Circle Jerks: March 2012

http://www.thecirclejerks.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Five birders thrash their local shrubbery for a whole year, to little real effect. One of them does it using a camel, but none of them is into cars. Saturday, 31 March 2012. LRP nailed but an untickable one too. A friend was due round for dinner at 7:30pm yesterday evening so it probably wasn't the most sensible thing on my part to belt out in the car at 7 to check if two wader species reported at Micklemere (22 miles return! Materialised in front of me as the site's pre-roost dispersed! Wednesday, 28 Ma...

The Weekend Biologist: Moths

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2013/07/moths.html

Friday, 19 July 2013. It has been a while since any moths featured here. Not had time for a huge amount of trapping this year but have done a bit over the last couple of weeks now the weather is better. Having started only last year and with last summer being rubbish, lots of new species have found their way into the trap. I'm also trying to start with micros but am only having limited success! True Lovers Knot - possibly the coolest common name ever! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Weekend Biologist: March 2013

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, 9 March 2013. Got the trap out last night, trying to take advantage of a bit of warmth before the predicted snow! Worthwhile as well with 5 species:. Satellite (new for me). This flightless female Dotted Border appeared on the wall this week as well. Saturday, 2 March 2013. Common Haircap Moss) from Ayelsbeare on Monday when I was visiting a student on placement. 900 isn't much to shout about but they do say that it is not the size that matters but if it gives you pleasure anyway.

The Weekend Biologist: December 2012

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, 20 December 2012. Not posted for a while due to work commitments. I have also given on to getting a phone that does more than make calls so this is a bit of a test. Winter heliotrope is currently in flower everywhere here. Nice to see some flowers at this time of year but it is a bit of a pity that this plant is so invasive! My eradication efforts obviously haven't worked. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Coastal North Minileague - October 2016. Music for the Morning.

The Weekend Biologist: October 2012

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 October 2012. 5 year ticks for Wembury in two days now! Early vis mig watch this morning was a bit of a damp squib with two Brambling being the highlight. At least two of the Firecrests were still present as were 12 Wigeon, 3 Mute Swan and 3 Teal. Best I could manage at 1/30 of a second. Patch highlight this morning! First stop was Thurlestone/South Milton where the best bird was a Sanderling on the beach. Saturday, 27 October 2012. Long standing thrush problem finally resolved. At least accor...

The Weekend Biologist: July 2013

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 23 July 2013. A trip up to Dartmoor yesterday to mess around in some ponds collecting some water samples. I found something that I had been looking for for ages - Black Darter ( Sympetrum danae. I had a hunch that this was going to be danae. But had to wait for it to climb up the stem and leave the exuvia. Actually ended up IDing the dragonfly from the exuvia as it was so young! When it had hardened off a bit it was clearer that it was a danae. The UK confusion species are S. striolatum. It has ...

The Weekend Biologist: Billington Lab

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/p/billington-lab.html

Quite a lot of the work we do seems to revolve around the protein CD38. This protein is a classic cell-cell adhesion receptor (binding to CD31) but is also an ectoenzyme. As an enzyme, it is capable of performing three distinct enzymatic reactions starting from NAD or NADP producing a number of products (e.g the second messengers cADPR and NAADP) but its main role may well be in NAD homeostasis. The Weekend Biologist: September 2012

http://theweekendbiologist.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, 30 September 2012. Very little time this weekend so just some short visits to the patch. Mipits dominated and are now moving in good numbers. A few Skylarks and small groups of Siskins livened things up a bit but the mega Sibe must have been lurking unseen. Ringed Plover was a sad addition to a paultry year list! There was a lot more insect action than in the last few weeks mostly on the Ivy:. Very late out this year? Curry Moor - Premier birding site! Sunday, 23 September 2012. Nothing startling...

Sunday, 23 June 2013. Graphical representation of data. Correct use of the pie chart! With apologies for borrowing the picture! Friday, 14 June 2013. Some plants for those who are interested. I have been trying to get my head round plants as there are lots of them I don't know. It is always fun starting almost afresh on a big group as you spend long periods of time puzzling over some of the commonest of species which makes you feel a bit stupid! Most of these are pretty common:. Tuesday, 11 June 2013.
