The ups and downs of the gardening world. Upcoming Events and News. Create a Fairy Woodland →. February 6, 2012. I think that Hellebores are a well kept secret of garden enthusiasts. What other plant resists deer, drought, neglect, likes shade-even deep shade, is evergreen, is good for cut flower arrangements, and is perfectly beautiful? Did I mention that it blooms for 3 months of the year? Hellebore with down facing flowers. So, why isn’t this plant in more gardens? Good Things Come to Those Who Wait.

Life on the mini-farm, with just us, the neighbors, and the zoning code. It’s snowing, so it’s Soup Day. Here’s what I’m making. How about you? Brazilian Black Bean Soup (Feijoada). 1 lb black beans, washed and picked over. 1 orange, cut in chunks. 1 bottle spicy V8 (or regular V8). Additional water as needed. Bring water and beans to a boil. Simmer on medium high for 20 minutes. Let stand overnight. Spicy V8 is spicy. Tomato juice, puree, or paste, canned tomatoes or tomatoes with chilis will do. Signature Gardens: Fall Leaves an Impression on Winter
http://signaturegardens.blogspot.com/2013/12/fall-leaves-impression-on-winter.html
The signature of God is written in flowers. Monday, December 16, 2013. Fall Leaves an Impression on Winter. Usually the leaves fall before the snow flies, but this year it was just the opposite. When our weather went from balmy to brrr. In just a matter of hours, the freezing rain and sleet fell before the trees had a chance to drop their leaves. My neighbors' pretty Shumard Red Oak. At first the winter scene was rather impressive, but then in no time at all the white stuff was littered with fallen leaves.
Signature Gardens: From Balmy to Brrrr
http://signaturegardens.blogspot.com/2013/12/from-balmy-to-brrrr.html
The signature of God is written in flowers. Sunday, December 8, 2013. From Balmy to Brrrr. The first week of December in North Central Texas was a very interesting week of weather. We started out the week quite balmy, with temperatures in the 70s. Early Monday morning a light fog. Had rolled in and created a beautiful photo op as the sun was rising. As the fog burned off later Monday morning, the Japanese maples in my garden were showing off their finest fall color. I originally had a 'Peaches and Cream'.

Life on the mini-farm, with just us, the neighbors, and the zoning code. April 3, 2013. My spindly little tomato plants, preparing to grow mighty roots! This is a cool trick to give your tomato plants a head start. If you’re buying tomato sets, pick tall spindly ones. If you started yours indoors, they probably will be anyway. Lay the bottle on it’s side, slit side up, and fill halfway with potting soil. That photo didn’t come out as clear as I wished it had, so here’s a drawing. Enter your comment here.
Suburban Garden Planning 101 – Suburbutopia
https://suburbutopia.com/2014/11/22/suburban-garden-planning-101
Life on the mini-farm, with just us, the neighbors, and the zoning code. November 22, 2014. Suburban Garden Planning 101. It’s raining compost. Fall really is the time to start your garden. It’s just raining compost as the leaves fall from the trees. The days are cool and much more pleasant to work in than the muggy days of late Spring and early summer. Your soil needs to feed itself, and if you are starting a new garden, it needs time to make the adjustment from sod to garden soil. Consider planting a b...

Life on the mini-farm, with just us, the neighbors, and the zoning code. Suburban Garden Planning 103. Collards and broccoli, just set out. So, remember how I said not to order anything yet? Hope you were paying attention, because this time we’re going to talk about an important piece of the gardening puzzle: seeds or sets? Should you start your plants from seed, or wait until, say, April or May and buy them from your local hardware palace or farmer’s market? How available is it? Some plants have a longe...

The Garden Diaries | The ups and downs of the gardening world.
The ups and downs of the gardening world. August 8, 2015. A skipper butterfly inserting its proboscis into the flower slurping up nectar. Butterflies are flying everywhere in my yard, swooping, basking, and fluttering like graceful ballerinas in a ballet. Observing the butterflies visiting my flowers and trying to catch them with my camera is difficult at times, so I did some research about their habits to make it more likely to capture them in the lens of my camera.
