A blog on user experience and design. November 2, 2009. Life as a consultant. I’ve just finished my first 2 months working as a consultant. On 1st September 2009 I started work at EMC Consulting, the number 2 digital agency in the UK (according to the NMA top 100 list. A blog on user experience and design. May 30, 2008. So this is my first post…. I’m not sure what this site will develop in to – if anything (useful). But I’ve created it because I think it’s important to share ideas relating to making and planning web sites. Information architecture is such a new and evolving discipline, I wanted to get involved in the community to let other know what it is to me, and to find out what it is to them. So on these pages I intend to share ideas on:. Share practical and techi...

A blog on user experience and design. June 16, 2008. Two books that have changed the way I look at design. The design of everyday things. This has to come first in my book recommendations because for me it is an absolutely seminal work. It will totally change the way you look at the world and how it is designed. You will start to look at products you can’t use easily or don’t understand and wonder. Although this book does not deal specifically with digital products, the ideas and concepts apply universal...

A blog on user experience and design. June 16, 2008. Wireframes are simply facilitators for discussion. The title of this article should really be:. Documentation is simply a facilitator for discussions. And the key point is this: in a web project we’re all (as a team) trying to develop a set of complex. About what this product will be and how it will work. As long as the IA documentation helps us do this in the most effective way, that is all that matters. I have no problem with people creating interact...

A blog on user experience and design. June 18, 2010. The user experience of the World Cup. England v Algeria gets underway in Cape Town. As I write this I’m coming to the end of a great week in South Africa where I’ve been watching the World Cup in Cape Town. It’s occurred to me that the World Cup is so successful because it gets the basics right and is so well organised. Here I’ve decided to share a few of the aspects I think are particularly important. The initial ticket sales take place in an online l...

Thoughts from my Chinese Notebook – 10/20/11. October 24, 2011 at 8:49 PM. I thought Steele Headed could use a regularly featured short post. This Chinese notebook Steve Ripple. Brought from his two-year adventure in Guang Zhou is just the ticket. Hope you enjoy what I can fit in two pages or less. As for me, I get the prospect of new opportunities. A chance to change my career, my location, my life. Dream seeds. I’ve planted them for the last few years and it’s time to sow. 3 Comments Add your own.

What I learned in graduate school in 700 words. May 8, 2012 at 7:17 AM. If you *really* want to know everything I learned in graduate school, it’s mostly captured in my thesis. Imagine that paragraph times 500. Ugh. Give me 140c any day ( – this sentence is 81c including this.). And I’m constantly asked about going back to graduate school: “Is it worth it? 8221; “Should I? If you have to ask, I’d say you haven’t done enough research on your own. But that’s not always the mentality o...1) Graduate school ...

Archive for December, 2011. My new gig: the offer I couldn’t refuse. For those who know me IRL. Or read about it here. You know I’ve been on a job search for the last few weeks. Having my position eliminated at the end of October gave me the chance for some much needed introspection and the opportunity to redirect my career. Being unemployed was unnerving, but I knew that the time was right for a career change. With my MA degree nearly finished, I was ready to take my next steps. So what would I do?

Archive for December, 2009. 8212; Sorry I didn’t leave a note…. No one likes to feel neglected. So I apologize to the marginally existent Steele Headed audience for my lack of postings the last few months. But amongst a busy school semester and working, I haven’t totally ignored social media. It’s no secret that I’m (overly) active on my Twitter page. And spend a bit of time on Facebook. Since my last Steele Headed post, I also started up a Posterous page. Played around with blip.fm. As a side note, Aman...
