Quick Rules for Naming Variables. I’ve been around the block a few times and have the pleasure of working on some pretty important projects, both on legacy code bases and ones started from scratch, and one of the themes I’ve run across over and over again is poor variable naming. Accordingly, here is a few rules I’ve come up with to make them better:. No abbreviations, ever. Be as descriptive as possible, I should not have to look at context to figure out what a variable is supposed to be.

My newest project, EsyBoard. Was launched just a few days ago. I created it out of the need to have a free form scratch pad to take notes while working or brainstorming. I tried the traditional methods, but they were all too limiting, so I tried other alternatives and they were either not developed enough or too complicated for my needs. It’s still in the early days of EsyBoard. For those intrested, Esyboard. Every day, as it’s just too valuable a tool to be ignored.

I’m pleased to introduce the Akka Console. It is a simple console that displays an Akka instance’s information. This was inspired by Typesafe’s Console, but is open source and under the same license as the akka code. Akka is a promising library, with Scala and Java APIs, that creates a light weight framework to build high availability, scalable sytems. The console is still very early indevelopment, and is aimed at akka clusters.

Thoughts on Working Remotely. Recently, I’ve been lucky enough to find a job at a company who values getting things done instead of having warm bodies in a chair. While the rest of my team works from the office usually, I am thousands of miles away and across several time zones. That said, here are some tips I have found to working successfully outside the office:. Effective communication through several channels is key. Do not hesitate to use video chat. Work for results, not for time.

7 Apps In 7 Days. It is my goal to create seven useful applications in seven days, while still working fulltime. Why would I do this? I’m doing this for a variety of reasons, to include refocusing my energy on creating useful programs that follow the unix model of small and concise applications that do one thing really well. I think this project is perfect for this exercise as I tend to get caught up in projects that are impossibly big for a single person with tight time constraints.
