The Stories of Trees. Bending. Adapting. Enduring. The Color of Hope. May 26, 2016. May 26, 2016. Every year with the leaves comes the memory: walking through downtown Denver with Alan on a no-jacket day just as the trees were breaking bud. The leaves had not yet resolved into the distinct greens of honey locust and ash, crabapple and elm. They were all fresh, pale, bright, Crayola-colored spring green. 8221; he said. (Language is too poor in italics and underlines to express Alan.). Hope took a little t...

A Lyrical Manifesto – The Stories of Trees

The Stories of Trees. Bending. Adapting. Enduring. March 30, 2015. August 2, 2015. It’s a train-wreck of a tree. What chaos that cottonwood must have caused when it fell: the thunder-crack of its trunk splitting, the roar of its leaves and branches rushing downward, the shaking of the earth when it hit and crushed the saplings beneath it. And the dust. The fine, gritty dust of the river bank rising like smoke to hang shimmering in the sunlight. The cottonwood–what about that first century? Human stories ...

A Gardening Blog. Mostly. The Gardens And Me. The Tropical Border And How I Learned To Hate Soaker Hose. July 21, 2015. Like last year, I gambled on a fine spring by planting up the tropical border early. In mid-April, to a comb-and-tissue-paper fanfare, I dug up the big red banana (. From its winter-greenhouse-home and wheeled it into position. And then I did the same for the ‘small’ one. Within a day or two of planting, temperatures took a dive and I gave the red bananas a little protection. I hadn&#82...

the stories of this life

The stories of this life. Monday, July 21, 2014. I've noticed something odd over the past few years when I return home from a vacation. I have a tough time transitioning back into normal life. On a whim, I just searched the phrase "post vacation blues" on Google. Turns out, I'm not the only one with these feelings. For me, I feel like the first few days back home are unbearably hard. Like life is slapping me in the face. I tend to compare the Before and After. Like in the photos above. And my favorite one.
