Gamejam entry: Wood Bird Egg Dig. Late April 2014 unleashed the fury of Ludum Dare. 29 and saw me having moved from Australia to Northern Ireland. I was lucky to compete in this competition at all, given I had no Internet connection besides an occasional single-bar of signal on my phone. The theme was 'Beneath the Surface' and I spent a day and a half working on a very ambitious dystopian future where the player flies a fragile craft through rocky canyons and craters (ala Hardwar's Titan.

Gamejam entry: Hyposonix Spirit
http://www.pixelsyntax.com/gamejam-game-hyposonix-spirit
Gamejam entry: Hyposonix Spirit. This was my first entry into a 'mini-ld', a mini Ludum Dare. With relaxed or special rules, this time with the theme 'IT'S A RACE'. This entry is a little more 'experimental' than most. I made a racing rhythm game where oncoming obstacles must be avoided else time penalties are incurred. The 'twist' here is that you have no way of seeing the obstacles before you pass them, and instead must rely on your sense of rhythm (and ears) to predict their arrival and placement.

Towards the end of January 2015 I participated in my first Global Game Jam. A 48 hour game development event where the entrants meet up in physical meatspace to collaborate. This was the first time I'd worked in a team during a gamejam, and also the first time I'd gone to a physical jam location instead of working from home, and so was also the first gamejam where I was fully clothed ;). My local GGJ meetup was at Belfast's Farset Labs. The theme was announced as 'What do we do now? I expected Gamemaker ...

Gamejam entry: Terra Bellum

Gamejam entry: Terra Bellum. 23 took place in April 2012 with the theme 'Tiny World'. After throwing away a number of happy tiny biosphere gardening ideas, I decided the ideal use for a player created tiny world was to have it wage war on the tiny world of another player. The asynchronous multiplayer aspect of the game was reasonably successful however, and the game was ranked. 65th in innovation and #325th overall of 1402 entries. Belfast, United Kingdom. Reactor Solitaire

You can play Reactor here. Sometime in my childhood I played a German solitaire card game on the family computer (a venerable Commodore Amiga 500). The play area was arranged in a 4x4 grid, with the edges being reserved for face cards. I don't remember much else about it, but decided to have a go at recreating it. The number cards are removed from the board by matching with another number card to add up to a total of ten. An ace matches with a nine, a two matches an eight, three with a seven and so o...

Gamejam entry: Bird of Prey. Entry, and my first gamejam where I specifically targeted touchscreen / mobile devices. You can download it for free from voxel.itch.io. Over the course of a week #7DFPS entrants are tasked with creating a 'first person shooter', preferably with some distinguishing feature. I took out the 'shooter' and made a 'swooper' instead, where the player takes the part of a predatory bird hunting rodent prey. The environment is populated with small skittering creatures that live and hi...

Gamejam entry: INFALL

After missing Ludum Dare 20, I returned in August 2011 for Ludum Dare. 21 ready to try my hand at a 3D entry. Equipped with Panda3D. And a copy of Blender. I bravely set forth to create a game based on the theme of 'Escape'. You are given barely any fuel and are required to perform a slingshot manouevre to gain enough velocity to break free of gravity's grip. The game features a 3D cockpit (with comfy chair! That you can look around. To the right is a radar map of your surroundings. You can play Reactor ...

Gamejam entry: Mr Snowman Visits Forbidden Temple

Gamejam entry: Mr Snowman Visits Forbidden Temple. Free download from itch.io. In the frozen chill of early December 2014 Ludum Dare. Crystalised in the upper atmosphere of the gameosphere and fell on my head like a block of terrible metaphor. The prescribed theme was 'Entire Game on One Screen', which was a bit of a shock winner. Obviously this calls for a blind maze for the player to stumble through. Despite my singing, Mr Snowman ranked #93rd in humour, #95th in audio and #132nd overall of 2640 entries.
