Besides an abundance of local birds, we also get an amazing variety of migreratory birds that stop to rest and feed on Punta Burica. One insedious practice that we have been trying to put an end to is the poisoning of creeks and rivers, by men who then collect the dead, freshwater shrimp so that they can sell them in the market. This sensless waste destroys huge parts of the ecosystem. I don't know what happens when the poison water runs into the ocean. The Macaw has not been seen here for many years.

Studies of this monkey say that there may be as few as 2.000 left in the world. Most of the remaining monkeys live in this area and over the border in Costa Rica. Dead mother shot so a man could sell a baby. At this point in time contacting us is not the easiest thing. David Teichmann and hi wife Vielka have email addresses but living out on the preserve and working with the animals means that they have to travel far to get to an internet cafe which is slow so don't expect a quick response.

Frogs

Every student of the environment knows about the fungal disease that is responsible for the rapid decline of many species of frogs and other amphibians. Amphibians need water to reproduce. Another problem we face here comes when people ignore the laws and cut the trees from the creek banks. The trees are cut to make more land available for cattle and farming but when the trees are cut the banks erode and the creeks dry up. If you are adventurous and show up we will find space for you. This cat was confiscated from a man trying to sell it in the streets of Bocas Del Torro. It was so small and sick we had to force feed it for 3 days before it was strong enough to drink from a baby bottle. Her name is Pansi Gorda which means Fat Tummy. More information in English. Back to the top.
