Tom Banwell—Leather and Resin Projects: July 2013

http://tombanwell.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 4, 2013. I have made a leather hat based on the 1656 engraving by Paul Fürst, the only contemporary picture of a plague doctor that I have been able to find. You can see that it has a wide brim that slopes downward, and a short crown that is wider at the top than the bottom. Here is my finished hat made of black vegetable tanned cowhide with a deerskin sweatband. The biggest challenge in making such a hat is shaping the crown. To assemble the hat block the silicone cover is inserted into t...

Finished Pieces - CopperSteam Labs

The Steam Amp II. The New Command Desk for the Ævil Lair. September 18, 2015. September 23, 2015. Upon returning to the mainland after 6 years running away from reality, I found myself with no furniture. Not that I’m complaining. It’s a pretty good feeling to find yourself without physical baggage. You get to start over. re-invision your world with a fresh eye, and do things the way you wish you had the first time. So I decided to build my own. The entire desk is built from one 4’x8′ sheet of...I have a ...

The Steam Amp II. I used to have a BIO. September 24, 2015. September 24, 2015. Part of the schtick. Personally, I want CopperSteam to be about cool art, dark rum, and building shit. Oh, and sandy Caribbean beaches. I know the beach thing is utterly the elephant-in-the-room when you first look at it in the context of the work on this site, but trust me. it’s there behind the scenes. September 15, 2015. September 17, 2015. And I’m feeling itchy again. On that note, I’ve been slowly but surely gettin...

Tom Banwell—Leather and Resin Projects: Uncle Charlie: Creating the Pattern

http://tombanwell.blogspot.com/2012/06/uncle-charlie-creating-pattern.html

Saturday, June 23, 2012. Uncle Charlie: Creating the Pattern. Once I finished shaping the plasticine clay for the Uncle Charlie mask I coated it with urethane resin so that the masking tape could adhere. Clay Sculpt with Markings. I used a grease pencil to mark where the seams and straps would go. Covered in Masking Tape. Next I covered it all with painter's masking tape, taking care to copy the seam lines in a felt marker. Cutting Off the Tape. The Masking Tape Patterns. First Leather Piece Cut. Id run ...

Frozen Charlotte's Curiosa Cabinet: August 2011

http://curiosacabinet.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 26, 2011. HOW, pray tell, has the amazing image of the "Plague Doctor" escaped me all these years? The engraving below is from the Wikipedia entry. Doktor Schnabel von Rom ("Doctor Beak of Rome"), engraving by Paul Fürst, 1656. Etsy His name is Tom Banwell and everything in his shop is absolutely fantastic! He has a website at tombanwell.com. But it looks like most of his sales are made through his Etsy shop. There's a whole steampunk section. Ichabod" in black leather. These masks are def...
