The main features of Traditional Jazz are the unscripted ensemble work, the unwritten but generally acknowledged rhythms that may be used, and the defined roles of the instruments. In addition to the 2/4 rhythm Traditional bands also generally play stomps, rags, and marches. Whilst stride and boogie woogie played by the pianist as a solo passes without much comment the use of some of the rolling Creole rhythms are frequently frowned upon. Trumpeter and composer Miles Davis had the greatest influence on the development of jazz fusion by a single individual. In 1969, Davis introduced the full-blown electric instrument approach to jazz with In a Silent Way, which can be considered Davis's first fusion album. Much of 1970s fusion was performed by by bands started by the Davis alumni. The list will be growing. Additional trumpet players will be added. Hope you enjoy.

The 1930s belonged to popular swing big bands, in which some virtuoso soloists became as famous as the band leaders. Key figures in developing the big jazz band included bandleaders and arrangers Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. Played with many bands, most notably with Billie Holiday. Roy was known for his high range. Others that continued in that discipline were Cat Anderson.

In the mid-1940s bebop performers helped to shift jazz from danceable popular music towards a more challenging musician's music. Differing greatly from swing, early bebop divorced itself from dance music, establishing itself more as an art form but lessening its potential popular and commercial value.
