They were located where Maola Milk resides today. When everything was quiet and still. And a fire broke out at Roper Mill. The fireman responded but ere they were through. An alarm was sent from box thirty two. They came and soon extinguished the blaze. Before much of the building could be razed. They returned to the mill and just before eleven. A narrow one about thirty-feet.

Good Shepherd Hospital - 603 West Street. 160;The fire of 1922 demonstrated the need for a hospital to treat the black population of New Bern. The building of Good Shepard Hospital, more than 15 years after the fire, was a direct result of that tragedy. The 58 bed facility provided much needed medical care for the black community.
