Tuesday, September 04, 2007. I want to talk a little about a technique that can be very useful. Like all programming tools, however, it's a double-edged sword and can easily be abused. I'm talking about microbenchmarks. A microbenchmark is a form of benchmark. Let's quickly define our terms:. To create or run a benchmark. Sometimes the term "benchmark" is too broad. I want to specifically talk about single benchmarks that are limited in scope. One commonly used term for this is "microbenchmark". Microben...

Tuesday, November 07, 2006. Everyone knows Sony's marketing can be, uh, interesting. Most people have seen the US commercials for the PlayStation 3, but not so many people have seen the Japanese commercials. Since the Japanese launch of the PS3 is scheduled for November 11th (aka 11/11), most of them involve people seeing 11/11 in odd places. They're short and interesting and there aren't any creepy babies. Here are some YouTube links for your viewing enjoyment. Posted by Drew Thaler. At 1:09 AM permalink.

Saturday, January 06, 2007. Better Food, Just as Fast. Do you find yourself going out to dinner a lot, or bringing home takeout food more often than you should? We sure do. Even though we've been making an effort to eat lighter meals at healthier places - our faves from around here include Panera. And our local Heinen's. Grocery store - it's just not the same as cooking and eating at home. There's a real difference in quality, quantity, and healthiness. And it's expensive, too! I'm looking at you.).

Saturday, December 19, 2009. A Christmas Present to Myself: My New Office. I've moved my home office from one room of the basement to another. I know, how boring, but this has given me a much-appreciated chance to completely rip out. And get rid of the mess and abandoned stuff that I don't really use any more. (Heck, back when I moved into my former office, I was still working for Apple.). As part of the move, I'm making an effort to make everything as wireless and high-speed as I can. I'm getting a litt...

Friday, June 30, 2006. CLImax 1.5d2 re-released. Any old-school scripters out there might be happy to hear that I've re-released CLImax 1.5d2, which I recently rediscovered on a long-lost backup. I've received a bunch of positive comments about CLImax from people including Bill Cheeseman (of AppleScript Sourcebook. Ray Barber (of MacScripter. And Peter Hosey (of Adium X. Peter was the one who actually got me to re-release it. For more information, including screenshots. Posted by Drew Thaler. Caching lar...

Tuesday, August 08, 2006. New Parallels Desktop Beta. A new beta update. Of Parallels Desktop has been released that updates Parallels Desktop for Mac to Build 1862 Beta. This update fixes the disk caching policy problem that PD Tweaker. Was created for. If you were wondering, PD Tweaker is perfectly safe to run with the new update and doesn't conflict with it at all. But it will be unnecessary once you have configured your VM properly. Choose virtual hard disk cache policy for better performance of:.

At the end of post to leave a comment! April 30, 2003. A Wet Wednesday in Freiburg. I can't get the messages on the mz Orange phone over here, so whoever is looking for me is still looking. The new iPods are out at last (http:/ www.apple.com), although the Music Service seems to be US-only for the moment (boo). I was going to buy the new iTrip radio transmitter for my new ipod, but apparently a new model will be needed for the new ipod, so I'll hold off for now. Gotta go, only a few seconds left. Spent m...

Tuesday, March 16, 2010. I ran across an interesting issue the other day while trying to make a cross-platform atomics header work on Mac OS X. Compare-and-Swap (hereafter, CAS) is one of the fundamental atomic primitives: given a working CAS you can implement any other atomic operation. But there are in fact two common variants of CAS:. That's OK, though, because it's theoretically possible to convert either one into the other. My first attempt was fairly simple, using just an extra load and branch:.

Thursday, December 03, 2009. The Economics of School Supplies. I'm interested in economics for one particular reason: incentives are fascinating. There's the psychology aspect: how can you influence people's behavior? To really do this well you need to understand how people think. And then there are the results: you provide incentives in order to get people to do what you want. And that's a powerful thing! I don't mean this in a cold-blooded way; everybody does this every day of their lives. But I'm sure...
