Amateur scribbles on my trip to India. Heading East: Jodhpur, Pushkar & Bundi. It is more spectacular. From it, the blue city spreads out in all directions; the various shades of the buildings mirror the brilliant sky like a bric-a-brac sea. The city gets it name (‘The Blue City’, not ‘Jodhpur’ which. See it. One shop sells just one type of chilli (I find out later they’re famous Mathani Red Chillies). He has hundreds of large brown sacks of them, all exactly the same rich red. I ask, Monkey defence!

Amateur scribbles on my trip to India. Rajasthan: Udaipur & Jaislamer. The city is protected by modest but erratic hills on all sides, and where the hill gives way to an entrance pass, old fort walls loyally guard the city limits. On top of the highest of these peaks is Monsoon Palace, a simple, modern 19. I lost a day to my first capitulation to food poisoning in Udaipur: A dodgy samosa went relatively easy on me. Out both ends. Twenty Four hours. Done. A brief and magnanimous enemy. March 29, 2014.
