To add to Heather's comments on what makes a good task, I took down this list:. Clear introduction with demonstration and expectations. Giving students a choice, if possible (in this case, the students were told to do #1 first, but were then allowed to do the remaining questions in any order). Checking for understanding of task(s) ahead. Giving students a chance to "talk it out".
