Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. August 15, 2015. I’m pretty happy. Somehow the sad, downy mildew-ed pickling cucumber vines stayed alive long enough to produce another batch of cucumbers. So yesterday morning I grabbed the cukes, dill, garlic, grapevine leaves and jalapeños form the garden and knocked out a few jars of hot dill spears. I cherish these pickles in the dead of winter. Hot and crunchy and full of vavoom on a cold, snowy night. The first buckwheat cover crop tha...
downy mildew: trouble in paradise | vegetablurb

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. Downy mildew: trouble in paradise. August 10, 2015. Right or wrong, it’s not always easy for gardeners to talk about the things that aren’t growing well. But sometimes those very things teach the most indelible lessons. From the beginning my cucumber plants have had a rough go this year. The rains came and stayed for a month. Now the plants are positively sickly. A prompt and thorough answer came the next day; Downy Mildew. Arg. Gardens aren&...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. Now the good news. August 10, 2015. After yesterday’s waaahh-fest about pitiful me and the downy mildew slaughter of cucumbers, it seems like a brighter story is in order. Most gardens turn out to be mixtures of failure, partial successes, and whoopee. For me the whoopee this year comes from the tomatoes. It’s been work, but so far so good. Cherokee Purple dead weight. German Johnsons almost there. Which means time for the freezer…. How good ...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. August 16, 2015. The carrots that started out their lives sprouting under a piece of plywood came of age. Of course there were a few that looked like fat six-legged orange snowmen, but I’m very pleased with the harvest. About 35 lbs. worth; more than we have room to store. The orange snowmen didn’t make the cut, but they’ll go to a friend’s horses. After pulling the carrot crop, I fired up the chicken tiller in that spot. Awesome. It’s ...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. August 13, 2015. Buckwheat ready to go under. A big meal for a little bug. Harvest time is in the smell of the air and in the cool nights. My favorite time of the year (along with spring, summer, fall and all but a month and a half of winter). I continually struggle to find the right balance of crops to grow for storage and crops to grow for fresh eating. Haven’t found it. Probably won’t. This entry was posted in vegetable garden. Our weather...

Orange abutilon babies | The Biking Gardener
https://thebikinggardener.com/2015/08/05/orange-abutilon-babies
An English experience of gardening in Ireland. About me: Books and work. August 5, 2015. The abutilon seedlings grown from seed collected last year have started to bloom. I collected the seeds randomly from the plants and have about 30 seedlings growing along. Some are strong and others less so but the biggest (about 20cm high) have started to flower and it is interesting that so far they are all orange. Does this mean that orange-flowered plants grow most strongly? Is this good or just different? Profes...

Lifelong biker (since I was 17) and gardener (since I was 7). Two disparate threads I know but they come together sometimes! Save Green Going Green. Know anyone who uses energy? Take advantage of the “Solar Flare”! Storage Locker Treasure’s. Guest Post: Non-Toxic Pest Control Methods for the Organic Gardener. July 11, 2015. Great organic ways to control pests. I use the canola oil but I mix with it dawn dish soap instead of the ivory soap. I think it works just the same myself. I never knew about the “milky spores” but I will try that as grub season is in full swing. Thanks, enjoy the post. Aquaponics Australia and Solar Energy.

In Irish), and that seemed to be east, I thought I would head for that. The road soon appeared to be far from a main route and when the signed town of Knockanarrigan appeared to have more letters in its name than inhabitants I started to feel less confident that the route would take me over the mountains to home! I had ridden into an artillery range. Photos below from the web.

An English experience of gardening in Ireland. About me: Books and work. August 7, 2015. Last year I grew several nicotiana that I was familiar with but this year I tried a new one. The reason was that I saw it growing at Mount Usher and wanted to copy their scheme of this plant with blue chicory. Well the chicory has yet to bloom but. Has been in flower for several weeks and is getting bigger and better. The name. And, I hope, my blue chicory. How to grow nicotiana mutabilis. Professional gardener, auth...

Vegetablog | my thoughts about my garden, paper & sewing projects, and other bits of life
My thoughts about my garden, paper and sewing projects, and other bits of life. Workspace Wednesday (on Thursday). August 13, 2015 by Natalie (QSOgirl). Yesterday, I took some photos of my craft room. I wanted to show what it looks like “in real life.” There actually are times when it approaches being as tidy as my “ show-off” post. Depicted, but recently, that has NOT been the case! It’s pretty cool that photoshop elements does an automatic photo merge into a panorama! I couldn’t stand it any more!
