Science and the Web. Peter Kraker's Weblog. June 16, 2014. All metrics are wrong, but some are useful. Note: This is a reblog from the OKFN Science Blog. As part of my duties as a Panton Fellow, I will be regularly blogging there about my activities concerning open data and open science. Altmetrics, web-based metrics for measuring research output, have recently received a lot of attention. Started only in 2010. Springer included Altmetric info into SpringerLink. One of the problems with the recent hype s...

Science and the Web. Peter Kraker's Weblog. June 25, 2013. An inclusive approach to open science. There is a OKFN pad. Devoted to discussing this idea. Please add your comments and critique there! When Derick Leony, Wolfgang Reinhardt, Günter Beham and myself made the case for an open science in technology-enhanced learning. Back in late 2011, we discussed how open science could become a reality. We finally concluded that this was first and foremost a matter of consensus in the community:. Which stores D...

Science and the Web. Peter Kraker's Weblog. Here are a couple of visualizations that I have been working on:. Head Start is intended to help researchers that are new to a field with their literature search. The visualization presents you with the main areas in the field, and lets you zoom into relevant publications. Head Start is based on co-readership patterns found in the Mendeley reference management system. The visualization is also used in Conference Navigator 3. And in the Organic Edunet portal.

Digital publishing: a great opportunity for science | Science and the Web
https://science20.wordpress.com/2013/01/03/digital-publishing-a-great-opportunity-for-science
Science and the Web. Peter Kraker's Weblog. January 3, 2013. Digital publishing: a great opportunity for science. Open access logo by PLOS. Why did I tell this lengthy and slightly boring story? Because there are still scholars who think that digital publishing and open access are seriously harming science. Douglas Fields makes many problematic assumptions in this article, and I do not want to address all of them. Jaleehs Rehman. As we can see, information overload is not a contemporary problem in scienc...
