Walking Route 66 Across America to Fight Birth Defects. Historic Route 66 is 2,448 miles long. Miss Billie walked an average of 20 miles a day. She walked 8 hours a day, for a total of 115 walking days. Miss Billie rested on Saturdays and Sundays. She averaged 3 miles per hour. She wore out 7 pair of professional walking shoes on this trip. Highest elevation along old Route 66 is 7,320 feet near Bellemont, just outside Flagstaff, AZ. Miss Billie was 63 years old at the time of her walk.
