Monday, March 14, 2011. Between long weekends, critters and technical difficulties, life for plants has been difficult at several of our Garden Science classes. The plants in our E.W. Stokes Spanish class, however, are looking great! The third and fourth graders in all our classes are also continuing to take care of their resident decomposers. Urban Youth Gardening Experience. Friday, August 14, 2009. It is exciting and calming at the same time to see these beautiful winged visitors in our gardens each summer. The kids become hushed and focused as soon as they drop down onto a drooping blossom and start squealing happily once they take flight. Urban Youth Gardening Experience. Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Lovely Ladybugs . . . Winter weather might keep us indoors, but we're still having lots of garden-related fun! This past week, our pre-K classes completed a unit on ladybugs. They learned that ladybugs play an important role in the garden by eating aphids, which eat the plants. We read a few ladybug-focused books (including Eric Carle's The Grouchy Ladybug. Pre-K kids paint their ladybug hats. Two pre-K students show off their lovely ladybugs.

Yesterday we were walking around Marion Street Intergenerational Garden, checking on plants and compost, and I was quite revolted to see about 400 of these things furiously crawling up the insides of our compost cans.
