Magic Casements: November 2011
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. In September, I spoke at the Ballarat. Writers' and Illustrators' Festival. My panel was called: Imagery in Fiction: Visualising, Imagining, Creating. While I spoke about landscape, Simon Swingler. Drew this illustration of me, which I love because it captures exactly what it feels like to have a place enter your consciousness and take over your thoughts. Recently, I've been dipping into Walden. Reading My Side of the Mountain. I read...

Magic Casements: March 2012
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Tomorrow I'm heading off to Singapore for the Words Go Round Festival. I'm excited at the prospect of meeting hundreds of Singaporean students during the week but I'm also a little sad to be leaving home. We've been back Melbourne for a month, most of which has been taken up with unpacking and getting the hang of living in a house once more. After a year on the road it's been a big adjustment. Saturday, March 03, 2012. Three week resi...

Magic Casements: Slash and burn
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2013/05/slash-and-burn.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Manuscripts have seasons. The spring time blossom of first drafts, the long hot summers of rewriting, the autumn of copyediting, the neat pruning/proofreading of winter before the book reaches the printer. Magic Casements: First and Last of 2013
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2013/05/first-and-last-of-2013.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. First and Last of 2013. The Clever Cats Book Club. Is my first release for 2013. I've always loved the Aussie Bites series of books for younger readers. It's taken me way too long to write one. Sometimes small books can present interesting challenges. The Clever Cats Book Club is illustrated by a wonderful young artist who just happens to be my second cousin, Florence Boyd. Thursday, May 23, 2013. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Magic Casements: February 2013
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Old Self, New Self, Other Self. Warning. This blog post contains nepotism and a dose of nostalgia. Every time I looked at the invitation I felt nostalgic for all my kid's childhoods. Monday, February 04, 2013. I love the cover of this summer's Voiceworks magazine. Possibly, I'm biased because my son, Elwyn Murray, is the designer. But there are layers of ideas in his cover design that intrigue me. Books that Elwyn had loved when he wa...

Magic Casements: Great Books and Disagreeable Thoughts
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2013/03/great-books-and-disagreeable-thoughts.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Great Books and Disagreeable Thoughts. What are you reading on International Women's Day? I'm loving 'Girl Defective' by Simmone Howell. It's spunky, lyrical and extremely hard to put down. I almost missed my station because I was reading it on the train into the city today. I'm hoping to finish it tonight and then jump straight into Kate Constable's latest novel, New Guinea Moon. You can't force boys to read books about girls when th...

Magic Casements: Making Tracks
http://magiccasements.blogspot.com/2008/03/making-tracks.html
Books are windows into other lives, other worlds, other ways of being. Yesterday, I sent my publishers, Allen and Unwin, the first draft of a new novel. It's always a great feeling when you let go of a book, even though I know this one is going to come back with lots of notes scribbled in every margin. I'm looking forward to turning my attention to another book that I've had simmering away on the back-burner. At the moment, it's called The Red Camel. S Across the Dark Sea. Saturday, March 01, 2008.
