Highland Cattle
http://wightconservation.co.uk/highland_cattle.html
Wight Conservation - Highland Cattle. Highland cattle are the ideal choice for conservation grazing. They are hardy grazers - they will eat a wide range of vegetation unpalatable to most cattle -, live out in all seasons and weathers, and have a long breeding life. Furthermore, they are relatively light in weight and therefore reduce poaching of the ground. The Mottistone Fold (herd). Lucy with heifer calf by Ruairidh of Glengarnock. Isle of Wight chalk grassland
http://wightconservation.co.uk/chalk_grassland.html
Wight Conservation - Chalk Grassland. Chalk grassland is the name given to the specific community of plants - both grasses and wildflowers (herbs) - which is able to tolerate the alkaline soil conditions found in areas where the underlying bedrock is chalk. A range of distinctive invertebrates are also associated with the habitat, including many which are not able to survive anywhere else. Scrub and cleared ground which was, until recently, forestry plantation.
Wight Conservation - history and archaelogy
http://wightconservation.co.uk/history.html
Wight Conservation - History and Archaeology. Wight Conservation s landscapes reflect the long history of man s habitation on the Island as well as telling some of the complex geological story. The ridge of chalk downs stretching from west to east across the south of the Island, which dominates much of our estate, is some 60 million years old and was thrown up by the same upheavals that brought the Alps on the continent into being. The earliest signs of man s activities on the estate that we have so far ...

The Wild West!: January 2014
http://wild-west-wight.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Thursday, January 30, 2014. Yesterday I decided to leave the Trailcam at a new sett. Entering the woodland I came across several tufts of Red Fox fur caught on the lowest strand of the barbed wire fence:. On my way home I paused to wait alongside some scrub nearby and was rewarded with the hoped-for Firecrest. Tuesday, January 28, 2014. More Red Foxes and Badgers. Yesterday evening I left the Trailcam attached to Patricia's fence over...

A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Thursday, June 11, 2015. Moths from near and far! Everyone agrees that moth trapping so far this year has been pretty dire, but we're all hoping that the numbers and species start to pick up over the next few weeks. On the other hand, it's actually been a pretty exciting few weeks for some of the migrants making their way across the Channel in suitable winds. I stood upwind and attached the net bag containing the pheromone (an impregn...

A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Thursday, March 19, 2015. Spring in the air! Spring is in the air, and the first Bee-fly of the year always puts a spring in my step! A few days ago I did a lesson for a Reception Class at Yarmouth School looking at Bugs and Flowers. I took in some Hazel catkins to show the children. They were fascinated by the catkins - the male part of the plant, and also enjoyed searching for the delicate 'female' flowers which are seldom noticed!
The Wild West!: September 2013
http://wild-west-wight.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Sunday, September 15, 2013. Red Squirrel and Red Foxes. It's been a crazy summer, and the lack of posts on the blog reflects something of that. A week in the Lake District has been a great tonic and I'm feeling refreshed and determined to post a bit more regularly. I love the way it bounds over to a spot just in front of the camera to bury a peanut, and the way in which it pats the earth back down with its front paws.
The Wild West!: December 2013
http://wild-west-wight.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Tuesday, December 31, 2013. 2013 has been another fascinating year when it comes to the wildlife I've been fortunate to see and experience. Here are just a few of the highlights:. I managed to see 87 species of Hoverfly this year. The impressive Volucella zonaria turns up regularly but I know that there are many more special species still out there.Adam Wright has discovered a new UK species on the island each of the last 2 years!
The Wild West!: February 2015
http://wild-west-wight.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Friday, February 27, 2015. I've seen 3 Hoverfly species enjoying the sunshine over the last few weeks, including all 3 earlier today:. The hoverfly below and to the right of the Episyrphus balteatus on this photo is Meliscaeva auricollis. I have seen good numbers of these in mild weather over the last few weeks. Notice how the orange and black abdominal markings give an appearance of black 'triangles' from above. This is another Erist...

A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Thursday, February 28, 2013. Why do Badgers groom so much? Yesterday evening's trailcam footage from Sett C revealed the usual amount of Badger grooming, which never ceases to fascinate me. But why do they spend so much time scratching and grooming? Here's one of last night's individuals self-grooming.this one seems to love spending time stretched out on its back! The trailcam footage from the last few days confirms the fact that self...
The Wild West!: March 2013
http://wild-west-wight.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
A wildlife diary of the western Isle Of Wight's beautiful countryside! Thursday, March 21, 2013. Following on from yesterday's post regarding the increasing numbers of Little Egrets, another bird with an expanding range and numbers is the Mediterranean Gull, or ' Med Gull. As birders refer to it. In appearance the adult has been aptly described as being like a Black-headed Gull with a Barn Owl's wings! Call, as one person describes it, which they make whilst on the water or in flight. Yesterday I spent s...
