Layla Holzer: April 2012
http://laylaholzer.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Friday, 13 April 2012. The Betrayal of the Sisterhood - Plight. A couple of months back, we were set a brief entitled Plight - to take a story/issue from the news and the world around us, research it in depth and then make an intimate narrative and put it into a context. The general idea is to inform, enlighten and shed a different light on some serious world issues. Needed to see this. As an Illustrator, I often have to, and am told to, consider what needs. I painted all my imagery on roughly A5 sheets ...

Layla Holzer: The Beekeeper
http://laylaholzer.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-beekeeper.html
Tuesday, 5 February 2013. I've started illustrations for one of my stories as part of my final project. It's based on the idea of rebirth, to be reborn into a better person. Once back at the beekeeper's house, it's clear just how inept and lazy Rena is when the old lady asks her to do simple house chores. Upon falling to the temptation of a ripe cherry tree in the garden, Rena chokes on a cherry stone which paralyses her before the beekeeper swallows her whole. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Layla Holzer: July 2012
http://laylaholzer.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, 26 July 2012. As part of my fairy tale research, I've decided to try my hand at making a Pinocchio marionette. Pinocchio is one of the stories I am intending on using in my dissertation, and the tale itself contains many morals and cautions that revolve around child behaviour and judgements. I wanted to create the character in the process of his comeuppance. The idea was to create a contorted, anguished figure that could be moved to look unnerving, uncomfortable and disturbing. I may also make ...

Layla Holzer: Art Inspiration: Caroline Gaedechens
http://laylaholzer.blogspot.com/2013/02/art-inspiration-caroline-gaedechens.html
Saturday, 16 February 2013. Art Inspiration: Caroline Gaedechens. Look could be interesting to try, using one colour. I used to work a lot with acrylic paints on canvas, so I have experience in creating thickness and textures in this medium. Could be worth an experiment, it may just give some whisper of depth and atmosphere to my paintings, especially as I am wary of creating completely stripped backdrops in stories where place is quite important to the narrative. Layla Holzer: Art Inspiration: Rachel Goodyear
http://laylaholzer.blogspot.com/2013/02/art-inspiration-rachel-goodyear.html
Wednesday, 13 February 2013. Art Inspiration: Rachel Goodyear. Rachel Goodyear is a Manchester based artist whose work I first came across a couple of years ago when researching the uncanny - the familiar turned unfamiliar. Her images are clean, minimal and delicately detailed but packed with surreal and disjointed narratives. The strangeness within them really lures you in and there is a very disturbing echo of the uncanny about them. Squabble, detail, 2012. M olehills, 2012. View my complete profile.
