This and the next two images are renderings from memory of the little house in which I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians in North Carolina. Memories of childhood are wide, powerful, and timeless, as in this poem by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. I love the dark hours of my being. In which my senses drop into the deep. I have found in them, as in old letters,. My private life, that is already lived through,. And become wide and powerful now, like legends. For a second huge and timeless life.

In winter when the fields are fallow and the leaves have fallen, the hills take on a certain purple-grayish hue which I tried to achieve in this image. I never did, really, but I do like that tree. Legal Stuff Blah Blah Blah.

The Womb of the Dawn. The title of this piece is borrowed from a poem by Raymond A. Foss. To be honest, I like the title more than the poem itself. More appropriate to the picture, I think, would be this verse from. The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. It is a gentle thing,. Beloved from pole to pole! To Mary Queen the praise be given! You have to wonder how a gas giant can exist so close to the blast-furnace of its sun. Pictured here from the surface of a small satellite, I imagined the atmosphere of Bellerophon being blown away by the stellar wind like a giant comet. It is stretched out of round by tidal stresses and its own angular momentum, and surrounded by a retinue of orbiting rocks. Legal Stuff Blah Blah Blah.

Sunday, 20 May 2007. Over the other side to Italy. On reaching Italy – no border guards here either! We stopped at a lovely picnic site to get a closer look at these chaps! They are ‘marmotti’ or marmots. Explained to us by a lovely Italian man that we met with his daughter Maya in Agliano Terme. He hspoke perfect English with no discernible Italian accent but he did have a slight southern Irish accent as his wife is Irish and they live in Italy and Ireland! Me stuffing my face with olives!
