Fragments of a Cale Season: If You Were Still Around
http://blog.fragmentsofcale.net/2013/09/if-you-were-still-around.html
Fragments of a Cale Season. A heap of broken images. Friday, September 20, 2013. If You Were Still Around. Music for a New Society. Cut, you say? Yes, yes. Bear with me. I've been thinking about it a lot for reasons that will soon become obvious. So it may not be very uplifting, but on THIS album it's one of the more heartening and life-affirming tracks. Labels: Music for a New Society. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A trying-hard-to-be-critical review of the works of John Cale. New York in the 1960s.

Fragments of a Cale Season: Memphis
http://blog.fragmentsofcale.net/2013/09/memphis.html
Fragments of a Cale Season. A heap of broken images. Saturday, September 28, 2013. And now for something completely different. Mr Cale has always had an eclectic taste in covers (Axton/Durden/Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel", Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso", Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows", Ralph Vaughn Williams's "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence", and so on), so it shouldn't be too surprising that he covered Chuck Berry's legendarily expectation-upsetting "Memphis, Tennessee". Fragments of a Cale Season: Fairweather Friend
http://blog.fragmentsofcale.net/2013/11/fairweather-friend.html
Fragments of a Cale Season. A heap of broken images. Saturday, November 23, 2013. It was rather classy of Mr. Cale to cover him. (And, hey, the saloon piano, especially the rolls around the two minute mark, is just a joy.). Jeffreys is still recording and performing today, but he doesn't seem to do this number. I'm fairly sure Cale has never played it live. I suspect the song is best left an artifact of this particular studio. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Checklist - Songwriter Albums. Fear is a M...

Fragments of a Cale Season: The Ostrich / Sneaky Pete
http://blog.fragmentsofcale.net/2013/10/the-ostrich-sneaky-pete.html
Fragments of a Cale Season. A heap of broken images. Monday, October 28, 2013. The Ostrich / Sneaky Pete. The world has lost a fine songwriter and poet… I've lost my 'school-yard buddy'." - John Cale. I know this isn't the most dignified tribute to a real titan, but might as well go out with a wink and a smile. Funny how Lou's voice sounded just the same just last year. Please forgive and correct any factual errors; working from memory. I'll hit the books tonight.). Good night, Lou. New York in the 1960s.

Fragments of a Cale Season: Hungry for Love
http://blog.fragmentsofcale.net/2013/09/hungry-for-love.html
Fragments of a Cale Season. A heap of broken images. Sunday, September 29, 2013. Is another contender for "strangest album". Despite the Jimmy Buffettesque name and hilariously 80s cover (dig that coffee-package album logo, that colorful sweatshirt, and the blue skies reflected in his shades! The 1984 album is aggressive, angry, and rather bonkers, much like its predecessor Honi Soit. How Music for a New Society. You can practically smell Foreign Affairs. Specifically, to love Mr. Cale more. He p...Espec...

Solar Prestige a Gammon: March 2008
http://solarprestige.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Solar Prestige a Gammon. One person's opinions on practically every song in the 1969-1977 Elton John catalogue. Sunday, March 30, 2008. Take Me to the Pilot. With its stop-and-start piano intro, chunka-chunka wah-wah guitars, passionate Leon Russell-style vocal and gliding Buckmaster string arrangment, "Pilot" is the album's most prominent rocker and a favorite of Elton fans, especially among the songs on the Elton John. Like a coin in your mint. I am dented and I'm spent with high treason. Appropriately...

Solar Prestige a Gammon: December 2007

Solar Prestige a Gammon. One person's opinions on practically every song in the 1969-1977 Elton John catalogue. Monday, December 31, 2007. I've Been Loving You. From March of 1968, the very first single to come out in the U.K. under the Elton John name, with lyrics (according to the liner notes of Rare Masters. By Elton, not Bernie and produced by Caleb Quaye. Sadly, it did not chart. Not the most auspicious of debuts, but a fine song nonetheless. Labels: Singles and B sides. Sunday, December 30, 2007.
