Rhodochiton atrosanguineus – A Barnsley Garden

https://abarnsleygarden.wordpress.com/2016/01/18/rhodochiton-atrosanguineus

January 18, 2016. Today I’ve been sowing seed of the purple bell vine,. It’s a tender perennial climber which is usually grown in the UK as an annual. It’s quite a remarkable plant, covered in amazing flowers consisting of a purple calyx with dark, almost black flowers hanging down within. Magenta with the sun behind them and the whole scene was quite spectacular. The greenhouse plants got high potash feed when the tomatoes were fed, so that clearly makes a difference, and something I’ll do again.

Clematis and Hellebores – A Barnsley Garden

https://abarnsleygarden.wordpress.com/2016/02/16/clematis-and-hellebores

February 16, 2016. The above photograph shows one of the most charming and yet understated plants in the garden at the moment, Clematis cirrhosa. 8216;Freckles’. An evergreen and quite rampant climber, it flowers at various times from Autumn onwards. Mine is growing into a large conifer, rather than the usual recommended warm wall. This probably reduces the flowering performance a little, but nevertheless the attractive flowers bob about beautifully against the dark background. I always think one of the ...

Harrogate Flower Show – A Barnsley Garden

https://abarnsleygarden.wordpress.com/2016/04/21/harrogate-flower-show/comment-page-1

April 21, 2016. Now I need to find somewhere to plant them. Today I was lucky enough to visit the Harrogate Flower Show. What a perfect day for a show: it was about 15C, sunny and windless, so it was pleasant but not too hot. Usually it seems to rain whenever I’ve been to such events. Although the the show has a few show gardens, it’s really more of a selling event. I couldn’t resist a few ( well more than a few) plants, some of which I’ve never seen before. Echiums on the up. A number of self-sown Canary Island echiums are bursting into life. I grew some a few years ago which did well, but then the cold winter (2010 was it? Home grown Christmas trees. There’s a lot of work to do at the moment in my other garden. All my little seeds are coming up – so exciting! Parsnip, leek, and onion. I make a lot of soup, mostly some variation of onion plus veg plus cumin or coriander, chilli, red lentils and coconut milk, based on this recipe. No point to soup unless you can stand a spoon up in it! So the tiny sprouts are all soup in potentia. Meanderi...

April 27, 2015. As wedding favours the bride and groom gave out the sweetest teeny tiny bottles filled with (I think) cornflower seeds. I’ve sown these in a seed tray as our slugs have form on devouring emerging cornflower seedlings. also I’d like to be certain what they are before I plant them out! Days 28, 29 and 30.

Mostly spent yesterday enjoying the fruits of my labour having had rhubarb fool for pudding at lunchtime and at supper! It was a particularly good recipe. Did plant out some onion Marco. Some busy days in the garden, in glorious sunshine which is making the grass grow like billy-o and all the weeds come out to play, too. As well as the weeds, my seeds are sprouting beyootifully, with the broad beans now showing themselves above ground and the sugar snap peas elbowing their way over the centimetre mark.

A Barn Owl's View

Tuesday, July 28, 2015. For the past two years I have struggled with the decision whether or not to have a hysterectomy due to my endometriosis. I came very close once, but ultimately didn't feel right about it. I had a laparoscopy instead (my fourth) and for almost a year it did bring some relief. Doesn't that send people to the hospital because of the intensity of the pain? It was sad and tragic and I let myself cry.alot. I had to mourn the loss. In an email I received a couple weeks ago from the Churc...
