Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move?

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move? Friday, May 14, 2010. GOLDEN WEEK OFFERS A GOLDEN TICKET TO TRAVEL. May is a wonderful time to be in Japan! Sakura are blooming in the north, the frost is finally gone, and people start going outside again. I must say that spring is by far one of my favorite seasons, but Japan has just encouraged my love for May (which just happens to be the month of my birth). This wonderful cluster of “no work” days is referred to as Golden Week. The carp is a fish that can ...

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move?: IN THE BEGINNING

http://www.austinsensei.blogspot.com/2010/03/in-beginning.html

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move? Monday, March 22, 2010. Every once in a while I am reminded of why journaling is so great, and this past weekend was one of those instances. As I sat in my apartment on a lazy Monday (I had Monday off thanks to a national holiday), I was trying to entertain myself by watching movies and reading a bit of classic literature. As I grew tired of reading my novel by Austen, I went to the bookcase only to come across my journal. The quote is by Samuel Johnson:.

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move?: February 2010

http://www.austinsensei.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move? Saturday, February 27, 2010. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT… IT ALSO CAUSES BACK PAIN. There’s something you should know about me before we start this blog relationship… I don’t do well with deadlines for writing. In fact, pretty much every journal I’ve ever tried to keep has failed miserably, with the exception of one travel journal I committed to in college. The first shot wasn’t so lucky.). It is Sunday, and I am at school. As it would be in America, the hallways a...

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move?: DIDN’T YOUR MOTHER EVER TELL YOU, “PLEASE SLURP YOUR FOOD!”

http://www.austinsensei.blogspot.com/2010/03/didnt-your-mother-ever-tell-you-please.html

Japan: A Quarter Life Crisis or Career Move? Monday, March 15, 2010. DIDN’T YOUR MOTHER EVER TELL YOU, “PLEASE SLURP YOUR FOOD! Over the past few days, I have been in the company of someone who is visiting Japan for the first time, and this experience has reminded me just how different things can be here to a newcomer. One thing in particular that I found funny was how reluctant foreign visitors are to slurping their food in public. Watching my friend was entertaining to say the least. The look I got was...

The Dropped Jaw Effect: Halloween Party

http://owencunn.blogspot.com/2009/11/halloween-party.html

The Dropped Jaw Effect. Sunday, November 1, 2009. Every year in Akita city we have a Halloween Dance Party and the proceeds go to Room to Read. This year we had a bigger turnout; due to relocating to a better venue and possible the fact that Halloween fell on a Saturday night this year. So this year I decided to put at least a small amount of effort into my costume. Shortly after arriving in Japan, about 2 years ago, a young student told me I looked like Lupin III. Set in a local store.

http://owencunn.blogspot.com/2010/04/hokkaido.html

The Dropped Jaw Effect. Monday, April 12, 2010. On the 9th February a group of us headed to the northern island of Hokkaido. After about 20 hours travel, including a ferry, we arrived in the capital Sapporo. Every year they host the most famous snow festival in Japan; the Sapporo Snow Festival. We spent 2 nights in Sapporo before heading to Niseko, the most famous ski resort in Japan. Niseko is popular because of its size and mainly because of the powder snow! The Dropped Jaw Effect: March 2009

http://owencunn.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

The Dropped Jaw Effect. Thursday, March 26, 2009. In Japan the school year is from April to March. There is only a 2 week spring holiday for the students, though most will continue to come to school for club activities. For the teachers there is only a break from teaching classes, but they must still come to school as normal. And sit back down at their desks and continue working as if nothing had just happened. Even though the previous day all the teachers were saying how nervous they were about it!

The Dropped Jaw Effect: August 2009

http://owencunn.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

The Dropped Jaw Effect. Monday, August 31, 2009. On Friday 28th August I got on a night bus in Honjo and 9 hours later I got off in Tokyo. I met up with another ALT who works in Akita city. We hung around for a bit waiting for restaurants and toilets to open. Strangely many of the toilets in Tokyo station close for the night! We were on our way to Mt. Fuji. The tallest mountain in Japan, standing at 3,776m (12,388 ft). Up Mt Fuji. It about 14:30 when we set off and the weather was a little cloudy. We wer...

The Dropped Jaw Effect: Winter Holidays

http://owencunn.blogspot.com/2010/02/winter-holidays.html

The Dropped Jaw Effect. Thursday, February 4, 2010. In Japan, Christmas day is not a national holiday. Many of the foreigners here take holidays and travel. That's what I did last year when I went to Taiwan. But this year I decided to stay in Honjo. On Christmas Eve, Chika an myself went out for a romantic dinner at a local Indonesian restaurant. And then headed to a darts bar where we were given "Christmas". Cheese cake and hot sake. Cake from random customers drinking in the bar. After our 4 hour drink...
