There have been dramatic changes in and around the fort over the passing years but the restoration here has enhanced rather than detracted from the original building. It certainly looks smarter than it did forty years ago, but was still a very familiar sight to me, although the surrounding area was much changed. It’s not know exactly when Dubai Fort was erected but the earliest part is thought to have been built in the late eighteenth century, to protect the the settlement from raiders coming from the desert. It was extended in the early twentieth century and has had a variety of uses. It has served as the Ruler’s Office, a prison, a place to accommodate visitors and since 1971, a museum.
