The Technical Divide. | The Toolshed

A place for visioning, tinkering, and building around the topics of education reform, technology, and female entrepreneurship. I read three interesting articles on women in technology this week: one by a male programmer. Frustrated by her position outside of the “technically entitled” caste because of her gender; and a final one. About steps companies can take to attract and retain women in their technology departments. Who are our role models? What do our educators tell us? What do our peers tell us?

A place for visioning, tinkering, and building around the topics of education reform, technology, and female entrepreneurship. February 7, 2014. I recently read the following start-up advice: “Focus is your most scarce resource.” I promptly jotted it down on a post-it and affixed it to the front of my notebook (which accompanies me everywhere), and it’s been glaring at me ever since. I can’t recall where I read it, but am thinking it was either from Steve Blank. Someone is noticing us! 8221; Recognizing ...
A few thoughts....: December 2016
http://www.jaymcbain.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 20, 2016. Jay McBain leaving ChannelEyes and looking for next adventure. It was exactly 6 years ago today that I stepped down from my 16 year IBM/Lenovo career to become an entrepreneur. In that final blog. I wrote about the transformational power of cloud computing, including technologies such as mobile, social and big data. I was able to follow a dream and be a co-founder in a fast growing software-as-a-service company. ChannelEyes. However, it is time for me to pivot once again.

SXSWedu 2012 vs. SXSWedu 2013. March 8, 2013. I did a lot of listening and not as much writing this time around at SXSWedu. In revisiting my notes and thoughts, I realize the most valuable way to reflect is to compare to my notes from last years conference. As a firm believer in the growth model vs. the mastery model of assessment, I’ve decided to evaluate the growth of the conference in comparison to itself one year ago. And Valerie Sakemura of NSVF. Technology in Special Education. At last year’s confe...

Controversy Around Text Complexity Goes Mainstream. November 4, 2013. Posted in Inspiration and Innovation. Infographic from http:/ www.newrepublic.com/. I haven’t posted on EdGeeks for awhile, but felt a surge of excitement when I saw Andrew Sullivan’s post about text complexity on The Dish. The general public has little to no idea how misinterpretations around the CCSS’s use of Lexile levels are affecting young readers. When you read Appendix A. Want to learn more? EdTech Workshop
Wednesday, February 1, 2017. Cross-posted from edjewcon.org/cesjds. It's January, and I am wrapping up work with a cohort of teachers from Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. The teacher-bloggers) to that elusive "authentic audience.". Here's the thing: we blog for ourselves- to document our learning, to sort through our thoughts, and, as Alexis. That is not ourself) because it's a natural part of the exchange that is reading-writing. Will they be judged? If you believe that teachers should blog, take a ...
