EdTech Workshop: August 2014
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 22, 2014. The 1st Week: Building a Foundation. My simple reflection from the first week back in the classroom is this:. Building a foundation for learning takes time. The pressure to "start (fill in the blank yourself)" is great. And yet, in order for the learning community to function smoothly, the foundation must be carefully built. The way I explained it to my students is that you don't build a house on the dirt; you first pour a foundation that will support it. The opportunity to learn...

EdTech Workshop: School or Learning?
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/01/school-or-learning.html
Friday, January 30, 2015. It's been such a long time since I have blogged here. There's no time. I'm too busy planning, teaching, grading, blogging on my classroom blogs, responding to student blogs, and the email.don't even get me started on the burden of the email! The more I don't write, the more I have to write. I miss writing for my own reflection, to look into the mirror of my mind and see what I see there! Passion Can Not Be Boxed. I think about schooliness. Whose blog, Beyond School. It is all ba...

EdTech Workshop: Edu-Innovation is Becoming The Same Old Song & That's a Good Thing!
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/03/edu-innovation-is-becoming-same-old.html
Monday, March 16, 2015. Edu-Innovation is Becoming The Same Old Song and That's a Good Thing! After I returned from last week's North American Jewish Day School Conference. In Philadelphia, I felt, as I often feel after a high-energy conference, excited and overwhelmed. I heard some incredible speakers, including Grant Lichtman. I had the chance to visit Science Leadership Academy. I presented a session on the tremendous impact, power and disruption of social media. I heard several recurring themes, outl...

Monday, March 30, 2015. Parent Connect: What's So Great About Finland. And I shared a Parent Connect about education in Finland. It is not a topic about which I am very well-informed, so a lot of our preparation consisted of reading and learning. I have heard so much about Finland, and it was interesting to fill in some of the details and discuss with those in attendance. We opened the session with this video, of which we showed the first 3:25 minutes. 50 years ago, Finland had terrible ed system. Why Fi...

EdTech Workshop: Empowering Students Through Meaningful Jobs
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2013/10/empowering-students-through-meaningful.html
Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Empowering Students Through Meaningful Jobs. Alan November's " Digital Learning Farm. I am experimenting with how to best structure this so that it becomes a deep learning experience for students. I introduced the jobs to 5th grade a few weeks ago, then introduced and started with 4th grade. I decided that students would need to apply for the job and, once "hired" would have a tenure of about one month. Tweet, look for and organize possible learning connections, manage maps.

EdTech Workshop: Let's Elevate the Teaching Profession
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/05/lets-elevate-teaching-profession.html
Friday, May 22, 2015. Let's Elevate the Teaching Profession. As a 4th/5th grade teacher, I read a lot of middle-grades literature. I have noticed that it is not uncommon for the villain of the story to be a mean teacher or a teacher who doesn't really understand or appreciate children. Of course, as Mrs. Granger from Frindle wrote in her letter to Nick, "Every good story needs a bad guy, don't you think? Side note: If you haven't read Frindle. Image Search for "Mean Teacher". The Myth of the Super Teacher.

EdTech Workshop: Parent Connect: Reading Lives Vs. Reading Levels
http://edtechworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/02/parent-connect-reading-lives-vs-reading.html
Monday, February 2, 2015. Parent Connect: Reading Lives Vs. Reading Levels. These are the slides from a recent Parent Connect session I led with Karin Hallett. Sadly, many parents seem to have the schooly belief that the whole point of reading is achievement and that pushing children to read higher-level books will equate to "better" readers. There is so much wrong with this I don't know where to start dismantling the argument. It's yet another symptom of t he disease of schooliness. Subscribe In a Reader.
